Forming 6.5x54mm M-S Cases from 220 Swift?
      #249542 - 26/06/14 01:55 PM

Has anyone any experience forming 6.5x54mm cases from .220 Swift brass? I was wondering if the rim needed to be reduced, or since the Swift rim is only slightly larger, could the case be used as is?

Has anybody tried this and if so, how did it work out?

Cheers,

Rich

I've done it,,though I've been told 220S isn't any good for that.
Works fine as far as I can see. FWIW, I use minimum to mid range loads, nothing max or near it. Not in fear of the strength of the brass, it's just something I do in any of my cartridge reloads.

I did trim the rim down and slightly deepen the extractor groove,,one operation on the lathe.
Tell you the truth, I never gave it any thought to try them in the 2 M1903's I have w/o going through the trouble. Might've worked,,the bolt face might not be the problem,,the magazine and it's rotor may be though.

I've also used the 220S as 6.5x53R,,leaving the slight factory rim as-is and headspacing on the shoulder. The one and only rifle I have in this cal is a sporter built on a Romanian bbled action and again works fine w/the 220S brass. Just enough rim to extract and eject.
Standard 30-06 shellholder fits the 220S factory case.
No case dimension troubles using the brass in any of the rifles.

I was given a bunch of oncefired Winchester 220 brass, so that's why I decided to use it at the time.

Thanks 215hq,

Interesting information, I think that it just might be worth further investigation to see if you can use unaltered rim 220 Swift brass to form 6.5x54mm M-S cartridges that feed and function. I'm sure that it has been done before, but what were the results?

Anybody with some Swift brass laying around and a mod. 1903 rifle game to see if the brass is usable without cutting the rims down?

I may still have some swift cases in the shed, you'd be welcome to them IF I can find them. I'm not sure why you'd bother though , PPU brass is available at moderate cost. I spent a few hours reforming 303 cases into 6.5x53 Mannlicher today ,to be honest it didn't find I a particularly enjoyable experience but I'm to tight to pay the asking price for the factory brass.

cheers
Pete

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the offer. I've not been able to locate any 6.5x54mm brass here in WA, not to mention PPU. Do you know where I could source some PPU 6.5x54mm brass here in Aussie? Otherwise I'll just have to use converted Swift or the expensive stuff.

Cheers

Thanks Pete, I think that I had bought some 9.3mm stuff from him in the past. I'll contact him and see if he has any in stock.

Hi 2152hq,

have you had time to see if the unaltered brass works yet or not?

G'day fsrmg1,

I got 6.5 x 54 brass from Shooters Wholesale Warehouse in ACT. It was a special order, don't know if they bought extra in at the same time but worth an email. IMHO I would try them before going down the 220 swift route.

Hi Pete,

I was able to get a couple hundred PPU on order through the website. Good price too. Hope to have it in 5-6 weeks.

Rich

How do you find the PPU brass performs?

G'day Francis, my experience is for the most part positive, the quality of the brass is quite good. There does seem to be some Dimensional inconsistency around the extractor grooves on some cartridges but it is minor and doesn't seem to be a problem with the 6.5x54 Mannlicher. For the price I can't complain.
