Sequoia dates

My M-S Model-1924 30-06 is dated (under the stock) at 1927. So when did Sequoia Importing of San Francisco, Ca., actually order these rifles? I thought that one numbered this low (Sequoia number 104, M-S Serial Number 227) would be made closer to the actual M-1924 model date. I had previously thought that the Sequoia model was the earliest, or one of the earliest, versions of the M-24, but apparently there are at least two or three years of M-1924 production before the Sequoia order. I would be curious to know the manufacture dates of other M-1924 rifles, including the Sequoia versions. Thank you.

M-Sch serial number 299 is 1927 also. Any markings on the barrel reinforce, where a Sequoia serial number would be, are covered by the soldered-on ring base for the Steyr "factory optional" snap-on scope mount. I am not curious enough to unsolder this base, fearing not getting it soldered back in exactly the same position.

I have a reprint of a Steyr 1929 catalogue. On the last page there is an advertisement for the Sequoia Importing Company. There was a western office in San Francisco and an eastern office in Detroit, Michigan.

Everyone mentions the Model 1924 Sequoia being prevalent in the west with Sequoia numbers being under 500; is it possible that the eastern office received a shipment as well, perhaps with serial numbers over 500?

My M1924, Steyr # 299, apparently never left Europe.

I have only seen a few "Sequoia numbers" over 300. Nothing more than that. So I think that the production number of 500 (or 1000!) is largely fictional. I don't know why the Mannlicher Collectors Assoc. (based in Oregon) seems so dead in the water these days, but I think they should have this information buried somewhere in a back issue of their journal. I was a member for a few years back in the 1980's and dimly remember reading about the the Sequoia, including something about the reason for the (rosewood?)schnable forend (with brass? pressure point) on some of the rifles. Unfortunately, it was too long ago for me to accurately remember anything specific.

Like I've said before...where is the Mannlicher-Schoenauer book? For such a desirable, even mythical firearm, this lack of any reliable centralized historical information is very puzzling.

I did a quick google search and found a site, gunauction.com, from January 2006 (auction no. 7152238) that shows a Model 1924 with serial number 1099 and Sequoia no 505.

Here is one which just sold at Littlejohns - price realized was USD 3,400 plus commission. The description mentions "interesting caliber" but doesn't mention the caliber.

Text says "the barrel marked “Sequoia 265”" so according to Mannlicher Collectors Association`s homepage:

"Early in the Post WWII production Steyr began to list the M-S as “available in 6.5mm”, which was taken in the USA to mean 6.5x54mm. In reality, the weapons were available in 6.5x54mm, 6.5x55mm, and 6.5x57mm. All of the 6.5x55mm and 6.5x57mm appear to be European products, blued bolts, but an US market example may turn up someday."

Ok, so the three digit number is Sequoia´s own serial number for barrel.
