New to me MS 6.5x54 and bullet question
      #243612 - 11/03/14 02:55 PM

I just picked up a 1903 MS 6.5x54 and am excited to get home from the slope in a couple of weeks and get some range time with it. I've also been accumulating bullets and brass for load development. Today I won the auction on some RWS 6.5mm, 154 grain H mantel bullets. I believe these are similar to the partition in construction except that these have a good sized hollow point. Does anyone have any experience with these bullets. I also scored some old 6.5 Lubaloy 160 grain bullets. Might be fun to hunt the old rifle with some vintage bullets. Thanks.

Mart

The H-Mantle bullet seemed to be well liked by those I knew who used them. Two of my German friends used them out here in NZ on red deer, chamois and tahr and they performed well. They are actually closer to a Corelok bullet than a Nosler Partition as can be seen in the sectioned bullet in this photo. There were copper capped and plain lead soft nose varieties that I saw used. Didn't know of hollow points.

Few I know tried them said they were ok, along with the Cone Points, Tig's and Tug's. Always seemed over priced here in Oz, the technology was sound "for it's day" and still work (Nosler Partitions still have a huge following) just have been passed I think buy new innovations. I still think RWS (changed name now I think) projectiles look cool though

Thanks guys. When I get home from the slope I'll post pictures of the rifle and the bullets. I can't view the pictures of the cross sectioned bullets. They have it pretty tight here on bandwidth and block most of the photo storage sites.

Don't forget to check the groove diameter of your Mannlicher Schoenauer. Mine, like many others, measures .268", and that factor limits the number of bullets available.

Hornady now has a .268", 160gr. RN, by the way, listed as a 'Carcano' bullet.

If you have a .268" groove diameter, this oversized Hornady 160gr. might be 'better' than the .264/.263" commonly available bullets.

If your oversized 6.5 is like my oversized 9.3 - maybe it won't care, accuracy wise about shooting undersized bullets. The 9.3x57 is actually .370" groove to groove and still shoots an inch at 100 meters with .365" through .367" bullets.

As soon as I get home I'm going to slug the bore. I have several varieties of .264 bullets ordered. If I need to I'll try some .268's. Hopefully it will handle the .264's.

Almost forgot, my last M96 6.5x55 had a .266" groove diameter -- it's bore was brand new, appears unfired, as-did the bolt.
That rifle put 120 Speer, 129 Hornady, 140 Hornady and 160gr. Hornady's into 1 1/2" at 100 meters off bags using the battle sights and Reloader #19 as well as Hodgdon H450 powders.
