Interesting front sight on Stey-Mannlicher 1899
      #243489 - 08/03/14 08:09 AM

I recently picked up a parts gun....a Steyr-Mannlicher Model 95 .256 made in 1899. English proofmarks. I thought I would share a few photos of its interesting front sight. The sight has tiny patent dates on the circular hood (PAT,AUG 01,86-JULY 14,91)...when hood is up there is a small post sight but when pushed forward and down, up pops a large white (gloaming) bead sight. Ivory I suppose. Its a nice piece of work. I know I bought it as a parts gun, but I find that I like it, right down to the big brass plates bolted to either side of the grip...It seems to have a shootable bore ....

This is a Lyman "Beach" combination front sight, offered f.i. in the 1925 Manton & Co., Calcutta catalog at Rupees 8.- and the 1940 "Shooter's Bible" at $ 1.75.

Thank you for the information. From what I see in images on the internet I assume the sight within the hood is either broken off or was reduced in height to correspond to a point of aim with the 6.5 x 53R.

BTW, your rifle looks like a typical George Gibbs, Bristol, GB, sporter to me. Gibbs not only sold these marked with their own address, but also supplied other "name" gunmakers, such as Atkin, Purdey, Holland & Holland and Rigby. These Gibbs Mannlichers are easily identified by a Gibbs B - prefix serial number. My own Gibbs M95, receiver dated 1899 too, is # B3085, while my Gibbs M1900 Mannlicher-Schoenauer, dated 1901, is # B3452. Often the final retailers added their own serial numbers, such as Purdey's A-prefix number on my M1900.

Thats very interesting...Other than Steyr, 1899 , there is no name on the rifle...

This one is B3135, marked on barrel, action and bottom metal..so I assume it is a Gibbs.

...by the way, how do you take down the bolt on these?...it doesn't seem to come apart the same way asa Mannlicher-Schoenauer.

The 1940 Shooter's Bible listed three versions: An ivory post or a bead, either ivory or gold.

As the M92, 93,95 Mannlicher turnbolt action, the bolt assembly is not as refined as in the later Mannlicher-Schoenauers from the 1903 on. (The M1900 M-Sch is somewhere in between). In fact, the "Mannlicher" bolt assembly is about the same as it's predecessor, the German M88 "Commission rifle" bolt designed by Lois Schlegelmilch, Spandau.
This is my way for disassembly:
Remove bolt from action.
Uncock bolt by turning cocking piece (with safety and firing pin nut) to the left.
Pull out bolt head. Watch for the extractor!
Take the bolt in left hand, firing pin tip down and thumb pressing safety forward. Press firing pin tip on a hard, non-slippery object (hardwood, not fine furniture!) and unscrew firing pin nut. It is threaded full length. On some British sporters the firing pin nut is additionally secured by a small set screw from below or left. Remove this first.
Release down pressure. Striker and mainspring will come out front of bolt.
The safety and it's spring may be pulled out of cocking piece.
Reassemble:
Slip striker and mainspring into bolt body. Note: There is a small flat on the striker, just in front of the thinner, threaded rear part. This flat should be pointing to the round side of the body, opposite to the bolt handle and cocking cam.
Compress mainspring again. Slip on cocking piece, aligning it with the flat on striker. Screw on striker nut until flush with rear end of striker or the set screw hole is aligned.
Place bolthead into bolt. It will only go in one way.
Cock bolt.
