Why no M-S book?
      #240521 - 13/01/14 03:53 AM

Why is there no Mannlicher-Schoenauer book equivalent to Jon Speed's "Mauser Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles" or Olsen's "Mauser" book or similar? The old books by Walter H. B. Smith are not equivalent or adequate. Aside from a series of articles in my RIFLE magazine back issues (from the 70's seem best) there doesn't seem much out there...The Mannlicher Collectors Assoc. used to publish a few things but they seem to have gone into hibernation...It seems odd that there is so little in print.

I have often wondered the same thing, considering the interest in these rifles.

I agree also. 15 years ago I said the same about Rook rifles, but then Wal Winfer and Tom Rowe came along. What about it, Tom?

I have recently become interested in the M/S. The Mannlicher Collectors Assoc. has been a thumbnail reference, and I thank them kindly for what information they offer. I even had a conversation with Mr. Tomkins regarding my first purchase. A definitive book would be most welcome.

I assume the records of the Steyr factory in Austria were destroyed during or after the war by bombing or as a result of the unconditional surrender that led to the destruction of all armaments factories. This was the fate of the Mauser factory at Oberndorf. Then, much to everyone's surprise, some of the Mauser records were found, leading to the Mauser Archives supplement to Speed's other books. This is a situation best avoided

Does anyone know if the pre-war Steyr archives exist, in whole or part? Presumably the post-war records exist which is the obvious place to start for any study of post 1950 MS.

According to Dr Samuel j Newland, Professor, US Army War College, in his on-line article, The Forgotten Giant, A brief look at military Small Arms production at Steyr, 1864-1900, footnote 25
"In 1945, the Russians took or destroyed most of the production records"
Steyr came within the US Army occupation zone.

I have ordered a 2010 book in German, Josef Werndl und die Waffenfabrik in Steyr, which may have more information on pre-1945 historical records.

Maybe I shouldn't be so suprised, after all I can't think of a big book on Sako firearms and even though they are relatively new compared to M-S they have a huge following as well.

Nice looking book cover..published in 2000?....is it useful?...and if so, why don't they have someone translate it into English? Its a simple fact that there are a lot more English-only speakers than Finnish speakers. And a lot of North American English-only speaking Sako collectors.

Good question, maybe the finnish publishers has got enough money with that finnish language version....

The translation would be a good job someone who collect SAKO rifles and understand both finnish and english. Here is the publisher´s adress:
