Steyr 1901,Nice

Just as I posted photos of my Lee Speed, the local gunshop rang to say my Steyr 6.5x53R had arrived. Took some hasty photos. Looks to be in very good condition and i love it. Barrel says "Shot and regulated by Army Navy Stores C.S.L. London" Butt plate is engraved with "J Orr Ewing 16th Lancers " which i found interesting. I don't really know to much about these rifles but i loved its look and lines. Anything anyone can tell me would be appreciated. Came with 4 clips and 20 very old rounds.

You can buy cases from Bertram or you can make them from 303 cases , I made mine from PPU 303/25 cases , Tony ( Marrakai ) made his from S&B 303 brass. Be prepared to see a few crushed necks if you make your own, you need a good lube for the shoulder area, I used Lanolin.

When using the .303 cases, push the shoulder back first with a .308 die, then trim and neck with a short 7mm die, then finally to 6.5. It's a lot easier on cases.

Pato has a double for the same cartridge and seems to be all over loading these. I will borrow a few rounds from him for a start. Its the least he can do as its his fault i became interested in these rifles. As a side note i have been looking into the name on the butt plate and found a Major James Orr Ewing in the 16th Lancers who was killed in the Boer War in 1900. Would have to assume it was the owner. May have had the rifle on order or the family had it made? University of Glasgow are doing on archive search of the Army Navy documents and hopefully can come up with the original transaction. They have a handy service for anyone researching Army Navy Store records.

Neat rifle!

I have a similar sporter in 6.5x53r and have found Winchester 303 brass to be the best for reforming into this cartridge.
If I recall, some other brass was a bit tight at the base, rims might have been too big in diameter or whatever, but the WW brass worked beautifully.
Running the 160gr SNRN it's a ripper, amazing -- almost unbelievable how well the hornady penetrates. I'm sure the woodleigh works similarly well.
Use a chronograph and get a good load running for your rifle.
You'll love it.

Very nice!

My Steyr sporter is a full stock carbine done on a Romanian bbld action.
A bring back from a WW2 vet, it came w/ 1 clip and 1 lonely round of 1917 headstamped ammo.

Who ever did the work did a nice job, but no name on it. Someone later D&T'd it for a side mount. I'll have to fill that in.

I make cases from 303 and 30-40Krag. Though the latter is easier, the Krag brass is getting kind of scarce, so it's back to the HXP 303 supply. They can be tough to resize. I'll have to try the 308 die trick.
With my rifle, I have to thin the base just in front of the rims no matter what brass I use.

Using 6.5 M/S dies.

I do have a set of 6.5x53R dies (RCBS) somewhere packed away. Would there be any difference between the two?
I was always lead to believe they were the same except for the rim.
Writing this now,,I'm not so sure!
