Mod 1952 30/06

Here are a few pics of the latest addition to my Steyr Addiction; the disease has now moved to the terminal stage, also known as Schoenauer. This is my 1st "real" Mannlicher and it looks unmolested, so I'm keen to hear opinions on:

A: Scope it or
B: Leave it alone you heathen!

Enjoy!

very nice schönauer and til now everything is right with it. I would only scope it with a Mannlicher Schönauer claw mount and a period scope. not later make as in the 70s and of german or austrian manufacturing.
here is a similar example

if it looks this way you have done right, if not ...
new claw mount parts are available in germany.

Lancaster,

Is that a period Nickel 6X42(?) you have shown? If so what's your opinion as I have one without the rail mount?

the scope on this schönauer is a Hertel & Reus 2,75-10x50 Macro Variabel. here is a Nickel 6x42 with rail http://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=3358054

my opinion? good firm, good scope, not the newest model but will work for most hunting situations.

Thank you. Mine is circa 1965 (with steel tube) but refurbished for a a total of (current EU$110). I am very pleased.

Might you care to post a short history of the manufacturer for the audience?

Thanks for the feedback, I've had a quick search around and it seems like the boys at EAW might have what I'm looking for. http://www.eaw.de/eaw/index_uk.php/item/305

Regards
H

not easy to find anything about the Nickel AG and I must go over Hertel&Reuss:
Hertel & Reuss was a manufacturer of optical instruments, based in Kassel, becoming part of the Gerhardt companies after a bankruptcy in 1995. H & R was founded in 1927 by Otto Hertel and Edward Reuss. In the 1970s H&R had around 400 people and exported worldwide.

Today, Hertel and Reuss is a brand name and distributed by the Nickel AG in Naumburg, northern Hessen. Before the takeover from the Gerhardt companies the rifle scope and binoculars maker Nickel AG was based in Marburg an der Lahn

I did not know they are allways making the 6x42
http://www.nickel-ag.com/en/products/scopes/s642.aspx

here a 6x42 C so I suspect its the third generation. its a scope they dont sell every day in germany today.

EAW is the right adresss for MS claw mount parts.

BTW Hertel & Reuss made the "Weatherby" Imperial and Special scopes of the 1960s.

After a bit of searching and looking the rifle over (and over and over) it looks like it has been fitted with the "dummy side plate" in place, However I'm not sure if it has been drilled & tapped as I haven't taken it out of the stock yet.

See bottom diagram on this page: http://mannlicherschoenauer.com/mannlicherfacts4.htm

Personally I think the side mounts are ugly and agricultural, but it may be the best option to get a scope mounted.

If I can find one in NZ...
