All orginal except that the barrels have just been professionally re-blacked by Richard Gallyon in the old method, he was amazed by the bores which are as good as the day they were made. This was lucky find at the Birmingham (UK) Arms Fair. Hope to make somesmoke very soon!

Garry.

Garry,

What a splendid rifle! The .450 is simply a marvelous cartridge too. You are a lucky man.

Please give a report from the range after you enjoy shooting it.

Thanks for posting.

BPEBuff,

Absolutely beautiful! Like having Helen of Troy or Nefertiti come alive as a 16 year old after all these centuries and land in your arms!

Congratulations and do post more pictures when you shoot and hunt with her!

Very nice, I especially like the case-colors remaining on the action. I'll look forward to hearing more about it after you get back from the range!

Thanks for sharing these photos of your rifle!

I have Lawsons in my family, it's nice to see such a neat express rifle bearing the name.

Cheers

Gents,

Range report is very very good, shot off a bench at 50yds see target below.

The Lawson regulates to point of aim with a loading of 300gr RNL (gas checked)and 120gr Swiss 2f,which closely duplicates the original load (coloured green). For NFB loads (coloured blue) I went to 48gr of H4198, with Kynoch foam filler and the points of impact spread out and mostly dropped by about 10" (I think I caused the R1 high flier). Would you suggest more or less H4198 to achieve regulation with the NFB loads?
A satisfying outcome considering my black patch aiming point was 4"x4" and both barrels are holding to under 6" with the load she was designed for. I like the Swiss powder, light fowling and rinsed stright out with water at the end of the session. Now I must buy some more Kynoch cases!

Garry.

Tinker,

For your info, I discussed Lawson's with Richard Gallyon who has a wealth of information and the old ledgers on the British Gunmakers. He discovered that Lawson's were trading at 70 Argyle St. Glasgow from 1890 - 1913. This DR dates to around 1895.

Garry.

Garry, from the looks of the Swiss powder load, I'd probably stick with BP, with some experimentation around charges, ie; down to 110, change the wads and try similar bullets of slightly different weights just to see how your rifle responds.

More shooting with that exact load is also required - averaging 4 or 5 targets is much more accurate than a single target, of course.

Looking good so far with BP.

In some guns a reduction of recoil produces higher impacts, in others, lower.

In this case, it appears your gun shoots lower and diverges with less recoil.

Be very careful about not canting the tubes while shooting and that will cause diverging/crossing and elevation changes as well.

Gary,

Beautiful rifle. I hope to be as lucky finding such a fine BPE some day.

Thank you for sharing your pictures and range report with us.

Gents,

Thanks for your input. Yes, I need to test the loads on more targets, hence I am buying 10 more cases from Kynoch (£2.90 each). For the NFB, I think I will up the charge to around 52gr of H4198 to give a tad more recoil so it prints a little higher. The NFB recoil was much less than the BP at 120gr - Swiss powder has got some bite to it!!

Your help always appreciated, it was very satisfying to get the Lawson up and running at last - I really like this calibre.

Cheers

Garry.

Garry-

Get PLENTY of pressure on your powder with those kynoch wads.
Do this for safety and for consistency.

Thanks for the notes on Lawson.
If you have any further information on the maker, please feel free to fling it my way via a personal message.

Cheers

BPEBuff,

Man, that's one fine rifle that you have there. Incredible condition! Thank you for uploading those pictures for us all to drool over. One of these days I would like to have a 450-3-1/4" BPE double rifle.

Regards,

Jim
