I thought it was a Lyman and then saw the scope was as well in the close up photo.

I think they were sold as a combo many years ago
as you see a few on English guns.

Not sure of the mount, but the stock's been re-checkered, and not to the original pattern. I'm also betting the stock finish doesn't look so hot live and in person. I think if you're diligent, you can find a nicer 1903 for this price or not much more.
Best,
Malcolm

The mount is a German EAW side mount, still made. See the EAW catalog:
http://www.eaw.de/eaw/webkatalog/drZf_21_AM_seitl_M.pdf
Warning:The base advertized for the Mannlicher-Schoenauer GK is intended for the post-1952 M-S rifles. It replaces the flat, dummy plate on the left side of receiver these late rifles come with. If you want to put such a mount on an older M-S, 03, 05, 08, 10, 24, 25, 1950, you have to fit one of the bases for the Swede M96 Carl Gustav or other Mauser.

Thanks for the feedback; I learned something too re the mounts. I can't entirely tell from the photos if the bolt is straight or not. It certainly does appear to be raked in one image as Kamilaroi notes, and the checkering is definitely not right. Wonder if the bolt handle was swapped out at some point? Even though I'm not looking to buy, I enjoy looking at these old rifles and am trying to learn more about them. I haven't seen many 1903s relative to some of the other model variations.
Kind regards,
Bill

IMHO the bolt handle is not bent back, it only appears to be in one image due to the photographing angle. If it had been altered for scope clearance, unnecessary with the EAW sidemount, the clipguide would have been ground down too.

Mannlicker?? cant they read on the rifle before posting an ad? That name would at least scare of any male buyer.

I'm with kuduae--it's a stock bolt handle at an odd photo angle. Bill--there seems to be an odd synchronicity to the availability of these things. Sometimes you'll see a whole rash (well, relatively--say 3 to 5) of one particular model for sale via different web sources over the span of a month or so, then nothing for 6 months. It was that way recently with the M1910. On the other hand, the scarcity directly relates to the level of workmanship and time and skill it took to build these guns. If they were more common, they'd probably be a lot less interesting!
Best,
Malcolm

These EAW side mounts seem to be more popular in GB and other countries than in Germany. They are rarely seen on hunting rifles here, but more often on British rifles as on this Rigby:

Got the same on my G.Gibbs 03 Mannlicher-Schoenauer, but have to take photos.

Yes, I would agree with that - quite a few seemed to end up in the US as well.

Here is such an EAW sidemount on my M 03 .256 Gibbs aka 6.5x54 M-Sch military action, "sporterized" in 1905 by George Gibbs, Bristol, GB. The scope is a vintage Zeiss "Zielvier"

Thanks kuduae and 500N. Interesting to hear the history on these mounts. I still am partial to the claw mount, esp on the MS-actioned rifle although I do appreciate what they do to keep the scope low to the bore axis. Kuduae where in Germany are you? I did an exchange year (Parliamentarische Patenschafts Programm) in '92-'93. Spent a month in Tubingen then lived in Magdeburg and finally Braunschweig for the next 12 mos-perhaps your neck of the woods?
Best,
Bill

I know I've posted on this before, but I still haven't reached a definitive conclusion. I'm trying to learn more about factory scope-mounting on the pre-war models--the only system I'm sure of is the Springer-type pincer mount mated to a base on the rear of the barrel, just ahead of the action ring, with a single screw in left side of the bridge as the rear base. Was a similar set-up ever factory-mated to a base dovetailed into the action ring itself? I think it may have been very early on (teens or early twenties), in a manner that did not distort the lettering atop the action, but don't know for sure. Also curious if claw-mounts were ever a factory install. If anyone knows, please enlighten!
Thanks--
Malcolm
