6.5x54 as deer legal in England
      #156791 - 18/03/10 12:24 AM

Can any one provide me with details on what is the legal requirement (balistics) to hunt deer in the UK and what the 6.5x54 160gr can achieve with factory ammo as well as the 140gr.
Also the rifle is not a full stock carbine but a take down rifle, (dont have it with me to measure barrel length) What is the difference going to be. MV between the 2 rifle types with the two above bullet weights.

thanks

BlueZulu, Bramble or jabali Hunter will know for sure but I think it is a min 140 grain bullet at 2400fps. I'm not sure but I think the 6.5 X54 MS doesn't get this with the 160 grain bullet (in factory loads) so is considered "unsuitable" for deer (bonkers I know, Bell used it on Jumbos) but whether banned by law I don't know. Different rules apply in Scotland. My mate in kent says no bugger would have a clue if you bought in a 6.5 X 54 to hunt deer so I don't think it would be a problem, I think the RWS factory 159 grain stuff comes out the muzzle at 2230 from memory ?!, best, Mike

The question is where in the UK will you be hunting? The regulations are different in England & Wales. I tried to reply the other day but for soemr eason it would not allow it?

Anyway in England & Wales for Deer it's minimum calibre of .240" with a minimum muzzle energy of 1700 ft lbs. Recently they have changed the law to allow the .22 C/F to be used for hunting Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer.

In Scotland they also have a minimum muzzle velocity which is 2450 fps and for all deer except roe minimum calibre of .240" with a minimum bullet weight of 100 grains and minimum muzzle energy of 1700 ft lbs. For Roe a .22 C/F can be used providing it uses minimum bullet weight of 50 grains giving 1100ft lbs muzzle energy.

Hope that helps.

Minimum in England for roe is 6mm and 1700ft/lbs. Minimum in Scotland is a 50 grain bullet AND 2450fps AND 1000ft/lbs.
That means in England, the 140gr must be loaded to at least 2339fps and the 160gr must do at least 1988fps.
No problem in Scotland on energy, but you may technically be low on velocity.
Don't know what factory velocities are so you'll need to check the makers websites.
Dumb rules, but there you have it! As said above, whether anyone will know or not is up to you, although it may be more of a problem to get it on your ticket for deer in the first place if you haven't already.

Thx Jabali, so I am wrong, I am sure the 140 grain and 159 grain RWS factory ammo meets those requirements so in England no probs, best, Mike

Yes - it seems the RWS factory load does meet it (just) for England (I only found 1 on their site)
10.3g = 159gr bullet
670m/s = 2198fps velocity
2319j = 1705ft/lbs energy
Good news
Their test barrel was 450mm (17.7in)

BlueZulu - are you looking at that takedown M-S coming up at Holt's? Haven't seen it but looks interesting. Let us know...
Best wishes
