Mannlicher Schoenauer 1910 Take Down Carbine 400/375

This is my first M/S so I will appreciate all input.It is a 1910 Take down carbine in 400/375.It is marked R.B.RHODDA & CO. CALCUTTA on the barrel.The barrel is just under 20".It has a single trigger.The only fault I can find in the rifle is the Parker Hale pad on it.The pictures didn't seem to turn out very well so I will try to add more later.

Lovely rifle....I have a 1910 takedown rifle in 9,5x57MS myself....these are very handy..recoil is entertaining due to light weight...

Kynoch is loading .400/375 again and I believe Bertram can furnish brass..

Same here, retailed by A&N Co-op, cased with all the bits (mint as). Lovely pieces of work, light too.

Provenance is a Col D.W. Persse (R.Arty) ,then his family to me in 1986.

Great article about the cartridges. It is pretty muck the same as the 9.3x57 Mauser. great stuff and in a wonder rifle. I have looked at the 10.75 x 57 Mauser in an '88 mauser action. There is one in Houson, but I can't afford it. A bit bigger in caliber, but pretty much the same ballistics.
I love the mannlicher action as much as the Mauser. I have a Dutch/Indonesian 6.5X53R Mannlicher that I am going to "sporterize" because it is not a pristine type of military rifle. I have debated on a rebore to .375 Express, but don't know if I can find someone to do it.

The Rodda company is still in existence in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) India under Indian ownership and they still have the old records. But dealing with them can be a real pain in the neck. I would personally suggest contacting Erich Schoder, the last Mannlicher employee who recently reintroduced the old Mannlicher Schonauer rifles into production for information. He has access to a lot of the old archives. There is also the Mannlicher Collectors' Association who would be able to help. And, in Massachussetts, there is Tom Tompkins an advanced Mannlicher collector and expert who would be able to help.

On our site, also PM Don S. My guess is that Don has not seen this post or he would have been most happy to help.

And, apologies for not doing this first - congratulations on one more lovely rifle in your collection!

Hope there are many more in the future.

Very lovely rifle. In this modern day and age I still think these are the Ultimate mountain/bush/pack rifle. Some day I will have a original 1903 carbine. I can see a silvers pad and a nice oil finish on that wood in the future.

Years ago I had Cliff Labonte bore a NRA 03 to 35 whelen. Since than it has been bought up by a shop called "Clearwater" something or another. I will search it and let you know. They could surely bore that for you. Great American gun stock company has a pattern for the 1903 that I made years ago as well for a inletted blank

Thanks. I would like to hear about it. It would make an interesting carbine.
I have a new 6.5x53R barrel, but yet to have anyone that will mount it on the action for me.

I just lucked into two boxes of factory ammo for this rifle.It is in boxes of ten and the headstamp reads: Hollands 400/375 Nitro.The boxes read 400/375 RIMLESS CARTRIDGES,SMOKELESS POWDER ,270 GRN. M.C.S.N. BULLETS.Anyone know who the manufacturer may be or maybe when they were made?

Howdy--You're rifle is certainly interesting, and in beautiful condition. I don't know anything about your cartridges, but you may be able to buy new ammo for your rifle through Quality Cartridge in Hollywood, Maryland. If you google the name the web page will come right up. According to the Mannlicher Collectors Association this outfit does a fine job with the original proprietary rounds, and it may well be able to load for your gun as well. The list of obsolete and obscure chamberings offered on the web site is pretty amazing. Good luck with your rifle, and let us know how it shoots!

Thanks for the info,I had already checked into quality cart. and may purchase brass if I keep the rifle.The loaded rounds are over $100 a box and they just list 235gr. bullets and this one is regulated with 270 gr. bullets.

88mauser: I doubt you will be able to go from 6.5 to 375 if you have the rotary Schoenauer magazine. It Would require way to much reshaping of the caliber specific rotary spindle where in holds the bullet. MS rifles are notorious for feeding problems when cartridges are changed from the original. You would be very fortunate to find a rotary magazine available in 375 caliber. Better check that before changing the caliber of the barrel!! I am not sure what magazine your rifle has, however, and am refering to the commercial Mannlicher Schoenauer. Just a helpful caution...Steve
