1903 6,5 MS
      #100921 - 31/03/08 06:38 AM

so i got a rifle for niicky(my wife) and she likes 6,5 and i thought she should have something with a bit of class.

so i got her a mannlicher shoenauer at holts auctions, this one came from zim and was a hand down in a farmers family, until they got there farm taken away, it then came to london and ended in denmark.

i got it wensday and havent seen it before, so i was quite pleased with the rifle looking like what it was. a rifle that has been used but not abused.

the stock needs to go by my father in law to get some tlc, but that is what will get done.

here goes: 1903 MS take down cal. 6,5x54 ms

the action(i like the claw mount detail)

stock needing TLC

front end(i loves those sleek lines)

peep sight in upright

peep sight in is cradle

enjoy it as much as me and niicky

best regards

peter

Very nice rifle. The classic 03 model takedown. They used to be common, but most I see lately are modified, drilled, restocked, refinished, etc. A nice, original example like yours is becoming harder to find. Congrats. Dave

Glad you got the rifle home for Niicky
Great little rifle which the majority of people here denmark would not approve of............but lucky for us who likes them, can find them for decent "candy"

Congratulations! It is much tidier than my identical 1910 9.5X57 take-down. Mine came from the Tea Plantions of Ceylon & South India.

Peter

very nice.

I hope to source a vintage M-S carbine in 6.5x54 one day. Beautiful little rifles and absolute classics.

Seeing it has claw mount bases, is it going to get a scope mounted?

I need to get out more....

Never seen that before!

I don't suppose it locks the mag-latch from depressing...? (although I can't see a requirement for that).

..or locks the spindle from turning, in the manner of a magazine cut-off?

Nah, NFI

My vote is a magazine cutoff..

I gotta say, you got a peach of a rifle with a lot of personality. Somebody set that thing up to kill game. Keep us posted as to the scoping.

Nice catch!!

it used to have another peepsight besides the one in the wrist area, there is one on this forum that has the same peep sight mounted. my idea is that the one in the wrist area should enough. but exiciting non the less.

any more ideas the gun went to my father in law yesterday just before i shot the pictures, so i wont be able to take the gun apart before the stock work is done. i gave him a digital camera to do so pictures on the way so i could show the proces. oh well we just have to wait a bit before the answer will come.

best regards

peter

update

that lever is the action end of the take down system, it has a drop mag solution as well that i have never seen on a gun this early.
i will do the details when the gun is back in my hand, which shouldent take that long since he started the work last night when they came home from our place, i think i created a monster

best regards

peter

The latch in front of the trigger guard is the take down release latch. You will see that the rifle does not have an action screw in front of the magazine.

The rifle can be taken down as follows

1 Remove the rotary magazine.
2 Unscrew or pop out the bolt in front of the sling swivel which locks the barrel band to the stock (My rifle has a stirrup type sling holder that is held to the stock by this bolt.)
3 Turn the latch in front of the trigger guard - your bottom photo is the open position (I think ).
4 Pull out the barreled action from the stock carefully! The tang fits neatly under the peep sight assembly. In models that do not have this peep sight (like my 6.5MS), the tang fits a bit under the wood.

Good luck with your project.

PS I tried my model 1910 9.5X57 MS yesterday. 3 rounds at 35 meters were 1 inch under the bull's eye with open "V" sights.

Peter, What is the status on your rifle? I am still waiting to see the Mannlicher Schoenauer with the "buttered silk" action!

So,
What is a mil-surp sporterized 1903 Greek worth? I have one in pretty good shape. I guess its an action and a good barrel. If I remember correctly it is marked "1927 Breda". Someone sporterized the stock and did an OK job. The barrel is done quite well and has Marbles sights. I was going to restock it and find a scope mount for it. A friend had a 270 done on one by Karl Kruger. It was gorgeous.
