My 1908 (1919) has been reamed to 8x57 and I was wondering if I should keep the velocities (hence pressure) of my handloads down to U.S. specs to prevent possible damage? Would European ammo be over pressured for continued use? I'll add that it has a "S" bore. Thanks

You can load it to whatever you'd like. US specs are something like 35,000PSI SAAMI with a .321" bullet.
What calibre was it to start with? The 6.5x55 is a Euro CIP 55,000psi number and the 7x57 Mauser is the same as an 8x57- ie: 57,00psi, also the same as the 9.3x62.
That's .32 SPL size. The US ammo or RP and WW today about matches 20" .32 SPL M94 lever gun speeds of around 2,150fps to 2,250fps with 170gr. bullets - according to those who actually chronographed them. Both make pretty good deer or small black bear loads.
I would load it to normal Euro CIP data strength - ie: 57,000psi as-in Norma factory levels.

I should have stated that originally it was an 8x56. Yes the W-W 170 grain loads produced 2275 fps according to my Oehler. Thanks

I don't think the 8-56ms was a "low-pressure" to start with. I seem to think I read it was loaded with a 196 at 2320fps. Being a 1908 in what we will presume good condition, I would load it right up the performance you want.
I am a bit recoil sensitive anymore and am thinking that I would reach "my" limit before the chamber pressure does.....:):):)

a M 1908 is allways in 8x56 MS
many rifles in europe were changed to 8x57 IS after the war and this was not done for loading ammo by hand to 8x56 specifications. would be a useless work dont you think? the action is strong enough

The metallurgy is not as strong in the early MS as in say a 1950 model. I would not load it as hot as Norma 8x57, for example. Fired some Norma in my first m. 1908, (had been converted to 8x57) and bolt lift was somewhat stiff. Might expand some metal at the bolt face, might set back at the lugs a little over time...plus, a dead deer won't know the difference when firing a slightly milder load, anyway. Steve
