Are the lighter loads worth loading in this caliber?

First elk I killed was with a 150 gr Speer in the .300 H&H. I forget what powder it was loaded with. One shot through the lungs & I was eating some good meat. As a side note that was when I had my first taste of elk liver and it is some mighty fine eating.

Hey Joe,would I be able to load down enough for a good Antelope cartridge too? I'm playing around with the one gun idea,just load it up or down as the need arises. I have reloading info,but that does not always tell you how the load actually performs.

I have killed about 90 head of African plains game with my pre-64 Model 70 .300 H&H, using almost exclusively 180 grain Winchester Silvertips. It was overgunned for some of the smaller game (Thompson's gazelle, gerenuk, etc.), but it put them down very reliably without much meat destruction. My main concern with using more than one bullet weight would be shifting point of impact. If that could be ruled out as a factor, then by all means try several loads.

However, I can remember situations in Africa where I was stalking one species and came across another species of another size category (Hartebeest-Peter's gazelle) which was too good to pass up. Changing ammunition from a heavy bullet to a lighter one would ahve been difficult if not impossible.....and unnecessary.

If you're talking about hunting in the US, where you are unlikely to encounter such a situation, then experimenting with a lighter bullet could be useful.

It can be loaded down with no problem but I am more of a one load/one cartridge type of person. I don't shoot it any more because it was rebarrelled for .375 H&H. If I was doing it all over again I would load a 165 or 180 gr Triple Shock to what ever velocity my rifle liked best and go hunting. I wouldn't be afraid to tackle a moose or elk with the 165 TSX. If you want a dual load try the 165 TSX @ about 3000-3100 fps for lighter game and a 200 gr @ about 2700 fps for the bigger stuff.
