Okay, who's shooting the .318, a classic English caliber for the bolt-action fans. .........what's your experience with it in the field, loads used, and in what make! ~Arctic~

Oldsarge has a particularly beautiful Greener 318 that he bought mint from the UK and MacNaughton is building one at the moment. Talk to them.

Without a dought my favorite calibre for medium game. I have (2) .318 Westley Richards droplock double rifles that I just love. Those here may be shocked as I have taken elephant with this calibre back in 1971, it was a brain shot of course. Also rhino and hippo met their demise at the end of my .318 Westley, though now a days its .375 minimum required by law.

A .318NE is best compared to a bolt of lightning. I can't say enough about this great British calibre, though the only draw back is that it's a very high pressure load, and the burn is very hot on the bores. You must really treat a 318's bores with lots of tlc if you want it to last a lifetime. As such it's not recommened for the unexperienced.

Well, I am fortunate enough to have two .318 Accelerated Express rifles by Westley Richards. They are both takedowns, one a barrel takedown and one a detachable stock takedown. I have only just recently connected with a set of dies and some bullets but I have shot a few boxes of original Kynoch ammo in 250 grain soft and solid.
The rifles shoot wonderfully and feel as comfortable to carry and shoot as they are beautiful to look at. Offhand at around 75 paces I am getting around a 3 inch group using the mounted Lyman 35 peep and the standard sights on the other. They both carry express sights and I have yet to try and reach out with the 500 yard leaf.
The recoil "feels" stout but the light barrel and slim stocks would account for that.
If you don't have on get one or have one built. They are a very fine caliber to shoot.

Can you provide any loads, I've got both Woodleighs and some original Barnes 250 grainers. The rifle is a Westley Richards with all the bells and whistles, plus the provence from original manufacture in 1899.

I have a double rifle in 318 Westley Richards made by Thomas Bland for W.D.M.Bell. I would like to find out why the barrels are 338 across the grooves, rather than .330, as the books say the bullets are supposed to be sized at.
I have fired .338 diameter bullets from it, with cases thinned at the neck to allow the larger bullets to fit properly, and the brass to release the bullets on firing. I have had good results with 180 grain bullets, and 200 grain bullets, although the gun seems to be regulated for 180's.
Any help in this matter will be of great assistance.

I load my WR 318 take down with
55 grains of ADI 2209
rem 9 1/2 primer
250 gr woodliegh sp.
rem 30 06 brass.
I don't have my book here with me so I can't give you the bullet speed.

I have a box of Hornady 205 gr sp on order .I'll let you know how they go.

This is an interesting round. How closely do the .338-'06 and the .318 WR compare? Seems like they'd be ballistic twins for all intents & purposes.

Possibly. I beleive the .318 will handle (accurately) the higher sectional density projectiles a lot easier than the 338-06 will.

I get 2900 fps from a 200 grn projectile,2700 fps with a 225 grn projectile and 2500 fps from a 250 grn projectile in my 338-06.

With modern powders it's not going to be any harder on barrels than other cartridges of a similar powder to bore capacity ratio.

"...it's a very high pressure load." Hardly; at least not for bolt action rifles.
