I cannot disagree with the BRNO Mod.2 nomination. It's certainly a worthy contender. I own a very nice example myself, along with a Winchester Mod.320 made on an Omark action, and an Anschutz. Hard to pick between the three.

HOWEVER.... They all fall in line behind a lovely little W.P.Jones sidelever break-open rook rifle chambered for the original BP .22 rimfire cartridge. Shoots modern standard-velocity cartridges very well. Folding sight-leaves for 100 and 150 yds! Just marvellous!

So it's a matter of personal taste...?

I'm partial to the Winchester Mod. 52C. It just doesn't get better than that, IMO.

Mine is similar, only in .17HMR- gophers to 240yds regularly. Sorry, no picture presently at the upload site.
: Mine is very similar, but with a 6.5-20X scope.
: For pure esthetics, it is difficult to beat an Anscheutz.

Millions of Brno`s have been sold but for the life of me i cant work out why they built that drop down stock forcing one to lift his cheek high enough to see through a scope...a pox on them i say....and dont worry you Brno lovers i have knocked a heap of rabbits with one...but give me my straight stocked Krico anyday, far more user friendly.

And why did i use a B for the rabbits ...well back all those years ago one could shoot rabbits with a broomstick they were so easy and quiet...and thats what was in my hand at the time, but i wouldnt bloody own one simply for the stock reason....2 cents worth

Have to agree with Gryphon about the Brno. Admittedly I have only used one, but I have used it alot (shooting bunnies in SA - 22LR). Not sure of the exact model, but it is a bolt action 5 shot (or so) sporter purchased new in about 2002. It has had sticky trigger/bolt problems from day dot, despite going back to the shop for smithing. Nice accurate rifle and a good balance, but I avoided buying one in case I got the same problem with the action.

I'm on my second Anschutz - first in 22LR as a kid (loved it), and now a 17HMR heavy barrel. Extremely straight shooter and good action etc... Probably wouldn't bother with a heavy barrel in hindsight.

Years ago I did a bit of shooting with a single shot iron sighted old 22 called a Skoblidge (spelling?). It was a friend's and he wouldn't part with it. I pulled off some amazing shots with that little thing. If there is such a thing as a 'lucky rifle' that was it for me!

I really enjoy shooting my Anschutz.

It's reliable, amazingly accurate, beautiful, simple, and holds it's value well.

Gryphon:
In reply to:

Dunno what you had, mate, but they're certainly not all like that! Here's mine...

Perfectly comfortable to shoot with a low-mounted scope.
BTW, the barrel on mine has been lopped to 20 inches, IMHO a worthwhile investment in both handling and aesthetics in a scoped Brno Model 2.

Sorry guys but I'll take my model 1 over your model 2 .Finish on the early model 2's may have been in a similar class but later models are nowhere near .
Brno , Anschutz , Kimber , Mauser , Walther , Krico , Sako have all made rimfire rifles worthy of mention .Think I'd choose an early Kimber though .

Yep it is the model 1 for me. Mine is a bit beat up here and there but it belonged to the old man so that makes the difference. It got a Christmas present of a Zeiss Diavari scope which looks way out of place on the old beast but I just love it even more now - a mix of old and new !!

375fetish ,
Mine belonged to my old man as well . It was the first "real" rifle (non air rifle) that I ever fired . The gun and I have lots of history together as I used it almost every day after school in my early teens .'51 model and still in very good shape although I have had a thin red Pachmayr pad fitted so that I could cut off a bit of damaged wood at the toe .
Mine has a Leupold 6X AO compact which fits perfectly behind the rear sight .
Here's an anecdote for those that prefer the model 2 . I talked my father into a deal where I swapped him a brand new - in - box model 2 for the model 1 about 15 years ago . He just wanted something for home security and wasn't using the model 1 anymore . I got the better end of the deal , an heirloom that I treasure and will pass to my own son .
Might restock it in the original pattern with a bit of fancy walnut one day . It deserves it .

About BRNO stock profile and fit.
: Most Americans are taught to crawl a high combed stock and stretch forward to the scope, presssing their cheeks hard into the comb.
: Most Europeans are taught to shoot standing straight, neck held straight, with head erect. This is also the position used for international competition. This position is much more accurate offhand, than tilting the head forward, pressing the cheek firmly INTO the comb. The reason is balance is mantained if the ears are as horizontal as possible. Tilt the ears and the balance suffers, increasing movement. a Increased accuracy is the reason for this design's use.
: In the USA, more shooting is also done from rests, whereas hunting in Europe shows more offhand shooting, or shooting standing with a single walking stick rest, requiring the best stance for accuracy. The Euro-stock is designed to the head erect stance, and with my BRNO and CZ "Lux" stock, provides much improved accuracy when shooting from that position. Shooting gophers offhand from 100yd. to 150yd. is much easier with the Euro stock, than with the higher combed stocks. It's a stock that was disigned to give the best possible accuracy from standing and erect shooting positions, simply put.(and one I prefer, actually) the same type of shooting position is done with the American Longrifle in many designs, and especially the Lancaster country and similar designs, which took their root designs from the German Steutzen rifles.

Bushie

My story is similar to yours. I was getting my first gun and we were off to the dealer to get a new model 2. It was approx $80 and that was about 2 weeks of after tax pay for me. Just about to take it when the dealer pulls out a brand new Walther with the factory target. Now the BRNO was nice but this thing was beautiful !! $120 so three weeks pay. Dad saw the look in my eye and said that I could have it and pay him off but I went for the BRNO - still regret not buying that Walther. Anyway dad took a shine to the new gun and offered me the model 1 for a lower price so I took it. I was happy with the decision and he still tells me I got the better gun.

Got to agree with the BRNO Mod 2, mine is like marrakais but not as nicely figured. Mine is also lopped to 20 inches and fitted with a moderator, I've lost count of the bunnies that have been busted with the old BRNO over the last quarter century but it's into the thousands. Handles well, shoots like hell and as tough as they come. It was one of my first rimfire rifles and you can bet it will be the last one I part with.

I learned to shoot on a Brno Model 1 and I have owned several 22s over the years including a Walther KK and an older Anschutz in India and my current is a Marlin 60 semi auto. If I could afford it, I would buy a Volquartsen semi auto, especially one of the Signature customs. I have seen the little rifles in Wisconsin and they were very beautifully made.

Cheers, everyone!

This is my only 22 rimfire Marlin 66 model. That rifle has killed alot of ground hogs. Don't use it any more I have the 22-250 that replaced it.

Anschutz M. 1416 (D i think it was) "Custom"
More class than a Brno
More accurate than a Brno
More style than a Brno
Not as cheap as a Brno, in more ways than one.
Not as overrated as Brnos.
etc.etc.

This is a little different than most of your candidates.

I just love my old Stevens Favorite octagon barreled single shot.

It's not new - it was old when my Dad gave it to me 30+ years ago.

It's classic and fun!!

It had to be well made or it wouldn't still be around.

Anshutz is very tough to beat. I bought a Model 1717 recently, and it's extremely well-made.
