In Praise of the .300 Winchester Magnum..

The 50-plus-year-old .300 Win Mag remains one of the world’s best long-range rounds, capable of uncanny accuracy in the field and elsewhere

I'm having thoughts of getting another one. Maybe an "A" bolt?
I would like a 26" tube. Got dies and likely 100 rounds of ammo as well as likely 200 of "extra" brass.
I should have kept the Browning I had. Surprisingly accurate with factory ammo.

The cartridge 300 Win Mag was my first hunting cartridge. I used it for hunting in the eighties in Greenland and the NWT of Canada.

Although there are much better cartridges caliber 308, the cartridge 300 Win Mag remains a versatile cartridge for the hunter who wants to hunt light to medium game worldwide.

I also shot a Muskox with the same cartridge and load, but in this case the cartridge 300 Win Mag is slowly reaching its limits. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures.

If I was restricted to one cartridge, as long as I could handload it would be the original 300 Win. Mag. I shot one for the better part of 15 years, more for fun and education at distances out to 1000 yards. I killed a little game with one but it's a bit overkill for anything under 200 lbs. and by the time I was living in elk country I was head over heels in love with a Shiloh Sharps in 45-90.

I also think that the cartridge 300 Winchester Magnum is very versatile and would recommend it to anyone who wants to shoot light to medium game at long range or who want to shoot not dangerous heavier game species at not too long range.

At the time I own a rifle caliber 300 H&H Magnum so there is no need for a rifle caliber 300 Winchester Magnum.

By the way, a correction. The date on the picture I posted above should be 1986 and not 1996. (DONE)

For his high school graduation I told my oldest son I'd get him a good deer rifle & scope. We went to a gun show around the time...and this was 32 years ago. He picked out a new Model 70 XTR in 300 H&H. We scoped it with a 6X Leupold and he worked up a load for it that is scary accurate. I watched him put 5 rounds into just under 7/8 of an inch at 100 with that rifle. It is rock stock.

The cartridge 300 H&H Magnum is also a very good cartridge, but there are far fewer weapons of this caliber available today compared to those caliber 300 Winchester Magnum, and if, they are significantly more expensive. At least it is in Europe, where the cartridge 300 Winchester Magnum is very well represented, but the cartridge 300 H&H Magnum hardly known anymore.

My son is a lot like his Dad in that he doesn't want what everyone else has, not that every Tom, Dick and Harry has a 300 Win. Mag. He had shot mine, liked it and thought the H&H round a bit more eclectic....and it is. Since you mentioned it, I don't think I know of another H&H in my circle of friends and acquaintance's.. I don't remember what we talked about all those years ago but when he saw the H&H, that sealed the deal.

I think the .300 Win Mag is a true American classic. It has a lot of appeal. Apart from it's shorter neck, it is a good cartridge and should be readily available in many good shops, components, dies etc.

I would also go for a .300 H&H Magnum however. Earlier and the original. Only a bit faster than a hot .30-06 but a true classic.

But I have a 8x68S and it can do every thing either cartridge can do. Bullets from 150 grs to 250 grs. I haven't used mine anywhere near enough. Hopefully I still get opportunities to use it in Africa, North America especially Alaska. Europe. Of course Australia and NZ. So doubt I'll ever buy a .300 Mag of some sort.

BUT I do have a Tikka/Valmet set of .30-06 U/O barrels. I've had interest in converting it to the slightly more powerful but lesser available .300 Super H&H Rimmed. That would be a cool option. I've got everything needed for a .30-06 but a .30 Super would be cool. A competent gunsmith would be needed. Either would make a useful sambar hunting rifle.

It would make a useful Double Stalking Rifle choice for BGRC shoots as well. And field hunting double stalking rifle.

The "old" .300 H&H belted magnum can, with lots of powders available, match & exceed quite easily, factory ballistics for the .300 Win. Mag. as can the .308 Norma Mag.

In all fairness there is nothing between the original 300 magnums (308 Norma Mag especially), just better marketing as to why the 300WM has done so well!

It does have a slightly larger case and uses more powder (2 important criteria) to get the same results, thus, it's popularity in the USA.
I've had a couple now and they were OK. Last one was a Browning A Something. I bought it due to the 26" bl. mostly and wanted a rifle
to play at 1,000 meters at our Blackwater range. That range is now 1,400 meters. It was so easy to heart shoot the buffalo, I lost interest and sold it.
Maybe I need a Creedmoor?

I'm waiting for the deathnell of the 6.5 Creedmoor when they release the .300 Creedmoor Magnum. A slightly shorter, fattened .308 Winchester with less velocity. It will take the world by storm. . Gotta buy a new rifle immediately!

It will die a'birthing. Too much recoil. It will equal or exceed 30-30 levels.
