Dakota Arms, what happened
      #366859 - 18/06/22 11:36 PM

What happened to that Dakota Arms company? No longer in business. Pity their rifles seemed decent.

I liked their Travellor model. Looked like a good design. Bolt lock up into the removable barrel collar.

The action looked like a modified Mauser 98 type design as well. True?

The .404 case based Dakota cartridges also seemed quite good, though hot. 7mm, .300, .330, .375 and .404. The 450 Dakota was based on the .416 Rigby brass.

John,
I believe that the company went downhill after the founder Don Allen left the company. I believe it has been sold (maybe in pieces) and is under a new name. Still, it wasn;t the same company as Don founded.

Well as I understand it, Dakota Arms was bought by the Remington Group as Dakota Arms did a lot of work for the Remington Custom Shop. Then Remington went bankrupt and the various companies under its umbrella got sold off. Last I heard Parkwest Arms bought all of the Dakota Arms equipment etc and is operating out of Sturgis, South Dakota. Not positive but I read somewhere that they are actually operating out of the same location that was previously the Dakota Arms shop.

Now take this all with a grain of salt as I may not have completely accurate information.

I have a Dakota chambered in .330 Dakota and it is a really nice rifle. Accurate and a pleasure to pack around.

Yes I read they:

Somewhere back say in 2006 they went bankrupt;
Two years later came out of bankruptcy;
At sometime Remington purchased Dakota;
Remington went bankrupt recently, 2021?:
Dakota closed:
Dakota in some form or its machinery were purchased and being operated under a new brand. Not sure what they are actually making. In the location as suggested.

I think they look to have made a quality product. In particular I liked their takedown switch barrel "Travellor" rifle design. I think the 7mm, .330 and .404 would make a cool set. Maybe one-day will design my own Super Express von Hahn set based on the .404 case.

Does anyone else make the switch barrel design with the barrel collar fitting on the barrel and being inserted into the action? On a Mauser 98 design?

I sincerely hope this is the case.

Thanks. Hopefully not too much emphasis on "long range" setups.

The brand name "Parkwest" sounds like an industrial park name. Surely some better brand name was possible!

Looks like they are still making the old Dakota CFR, and single shot actions and maybe the Nesikas. I don’t see the Traveler mentioned.

I hope they have the funding for long term operations. I expect there will be afair amount of start up cost including new engineering, procurement issues & training and will need months of operating funds before revenue starts up.

Not if they rehired existing capable staff.

The Dakota rifle is a slightly modified Model 70.

Do any of the Euro M98 takedown makers utilise the collar on barrel design? ie the bolt locks up in the barrel which can be easily switched in the action? Not the old relieved thread design.
