The Spanish-American War of 1898 was America’s last war of the 19th century and began the ascent of the United States toward world power. It also marked the first major combat use of the U.S. Army’s new .30-40 Krag-Jorgensen service rifle. Adopted in 1892, and placed into production at the venerable Springfield Armory in 1894, the Norwegian-designed Krag-Jorgensen was intended to replace the ponderous and obsolete single-shot, blackpowder .45-70 Gov’t Trapdoor Springfield.

I always kind of liked the krag, it's light and super smooth or at least the only one I ever got to play with was, bugger all recoil too.
But the best bolt action service rifle of all time was the Lee Enfield.

Wasn't the Lee Remington the first Service bolt action?

The Navy and Army used it, although the Army quickly moved on to the Krag.

I have always had a soft spot for the Krag. My great grandfather worked on the development of the rifle (he was a gunsmith in Norway) before emigrating to the US.

NOT sure .. the reason I posted this was I saw a clip yesterday on GUNS AND AMMO tv about this.. They were at the Cody WY museum for firearms..also stated this was the first.. Talked about how T Roosevelt pulled some strings to get this into use for the war he was headed into.. also were some issues during the skirmish..and heavy casualties.. But also the first time we found a war headed uphill into a heavily armed force...

The M1885 Remington-Lee was Remington's version of the Model 1879, and saw only limited use by the U.S. Navy, The Model 1882 was tested by U.S. Army and issued on a very limited scale.[Ref 1] Ultimately, it was passed up in favor of the Krag–Jørgensen in 1892.
