Have you heard about the new 6.8?

https://calibremag.ca/composite-cased-6-8tvc-gains-saami-approval/

In a nutshell, 135gr. at 3,000fps

Military small arms development continues to move civilian firearms innovation forward, even in the highly-regulated 21st century small arms market. The latest example: SAAMI has just approved the first composite-cased commercial ammo on the market, the 6.8TVC round. This big step forward is a direct result of the U.S. military's development of its next-generation infantry weaponry.

The new 6.8TVC cartridge is a proprietary round developed by Texas-based True Velocity. It's an attempt to nail down a design for the US military's Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) cartridge (SIG Sauer is working on a competing design). The composite case is supposed to reduce weight (very important in a military application) and offer improved accuracy and extended range when compared to similar brass-cased cartridges. At least, that's what the marketing says.

At this point, the US military has not yet approved any of the competing cartridge designs for its NGSW program (currently, the program is looking at ways to effectively mass-produce the new ammunition―read more here). True Velocity has taken the 6.8TVC cartridge to the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI) instead, to get the group's stamp of approval for commercial sales.

As presented to SAAMI, True Velocity's 6.8TVC cartridge fires a 135-grain bullet at 3,000 fps, with max average pressure of 65,000 psi. Certainly more jam than the 5.56 round the U.S. and NATO allies are currently using,

If you want a rifle chambered in the new round, you'll likely have to wait. True Velocity says it plans to sell 6.8TVC direct-to-consumer through its own website. It also plans to sell a civilian-legal version of its RM-277 bullpup rifle (through subsidiary LoneStar Future Weapons), chambered in 6.8TVC. As well, True Velocity says it expects firearms manufacturers such as Daniel Defense or Beretta USA to soon offer rifles in 6.8TVC, or conversion kits that allow shooters to reconfigure their existing rifles to the new round.

With that in mind, it sounds as we might have to wait a while before we see 6.8TVC available in Canada, unless True Velocity strikes an unexpected deal to bring its innovative new round to our market. Canadians can't expect to order either the new rounds or the next-gen bullpup rifle through True Velocity's website, and it seems likely that other rifles chambered in the round will be AR-15 variants. It seems unlikely that True Velocity would feel it necessary to jump through the hoops required to enter our market.

Having said that, if the cartridge does become available here, there are certainly Canadian manufacturers able to chamber existing Canuckistan-legal designs to the new cartridge. And in the long-term, if 6.8 rounds do become the next NATO standard, this new cartridge could be the first step along the way towards a 21st-century replacement for both 5.56 and 7.62x51.

Been following this for over a year now.. in fact a few weeks back GUNS AND AMMO on the tube had some info on this regarding the ceramic case...the development of the case in quite fascinating..

Interesting concept it's, sort of a short case 270win without the case sort of.

Not much good for Reloader, but definitely interesting all the same.

Gaseous cartridge case may mean no ejection port is needed. Decreasing dirt, sand, snow, moisture issues.

On the companies website they show pictures of their ammo and it appears the rim section is made of metal (to hold primer) and would need to be ejected. I admit I know little about this new concept but I think some sort of ejection port would still be required. Please correct me if I am missing something.

No I'd definitely has to eject at least part of the case still.

If the case is ceramic, that also has to be ejected.
This is not a consumable case as was being worked on for decades.

I think the case gets consumed, IMO. The word ceramic is just a word and I heard the word composite also being used. The 6.8 case is way different then the other calibers they talk about on their website. The others look very much like a standard case while the 6.8 is so so different. I think we need a lot more info before we will know exactly what they are up to. With the 6.8 it is obvious the customer is the military and the USA being to big customer on that front. Time will tell

At the true velocity site you provided, all the other cases, from 6.5 Creedmoor to .50 Browning, all have the white, standard shaped "cases" named composite.
Perhaps this is so they headspace in "standard" rifles.

Daryl, Did you look at the patent page on the website? Patents
Wow they have a bunch.
I agree with you about headspacing. I guess I am not sure what TV is trying to do with their designs. Is it to eliminate brass or design a combustible case?
Reading patent 8561543 it is apparent that the case is is made mostly of plastic and fiber reinforcement. The patent is not specific but rather lists almost every plastic as a possible choice so as to not limit it. (in fact I am surprised the list was allowed since it is so broad and all encompassing) Also it uses the word ductile which basically means it can expand and seal the chamber.
The other thing is what was the original design request of the US military. All I knew was they wanted to change away from the 5.56 to something bigger. (Heavier) Oh boy lets have the grunts hump even more weight into the field. Since generals rarely get off their asses and hump the boonies.

One reason they want this case design is to give more power and penetration but reducing the weight compared to current brass case ammunition.
But every year it seems the guns themselves get heavier with 20,000 different rails and attachable items.

There would have to be an ejection port to allow the unloading of a chambered round.
No - I didn't read the patent page(s), LRF.

Broad sweeping patents were usually not allowed, I thought.
Interesting.
Ductile would be requisite.

All very interesting. Seems the more modern the mil. spec. guns get, the bulkier they get.

Casings are ejected as normal. The first pic you can see the open ejection port above the magazine. Play the embedded video and they show it firing towards the end.

Can someone tell me the reason for this new caliber and gun to shoot it? Other then generals in Washington need to make it seem they are doing something constructive and of course open up the opportunity to get financial kickbacks from the arms/ammo suppliers buying favors. The 5.56 and M16/M4 have been around since the mid 1960's. Yes I am cynical. I only speak from being 72 years old and 2 years in Vietnam and using an M16. It worked.

I think it’s just another one in a long list of development projects to field a new weapon that never go anywhere. GD-OTS dropping out of the competition is a big red flag it’s not going anywhere.

I'm not the biggest fan of the 5.56 but what was wrong with the 6.8SPC, not my favourite hunting round either but I do like it for legged varmints.
They could convert their current small arms easy enough and it's got a lot more punch for the same weight and recoil.

And if you are a Sig fanboy you can soon get one of their civilian versions of their submission. Price is not for the faint of heart.

AHH, so new, cheap at twice the price.

But not my idea of a good rifle, for me, so I'll pass.

.277 SIG Fury Cartridge: Everything You Need to Know

SAAMI approved a maximum chamber pressure of 80,000psi for the new .277 SIG Fury.

First unveiled in late 2019, the cartridge is the result of SIG Sauer's participation in the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) military procurement solicitations.
