#4 Mk1 scope mount.
      #361229 - 28/01/22 10:52 PM

I've had a hunkering for a 303 recently, it's a great old round I like but I've never owned one.
I found this one at my local that might fit the bill.

It looks in great condition for its age, the barrel is like new and it has the original brass butt plate that I want so I can turn it into a semi takedown.
I will probably get some nice wood made for it and re steam bule the whole gun while I am at it. Probably cut the barrel to 16.5" and re fit the sight and maybe put a safari band on it too.
But I like the rear sight with the big peep, I'd like to keep it as a great back up sight so I'd like to come up with a scope mount solution that will be QD and not interfere with the rear peep sight.

Any suggestions or ideas?

The only reason to buy something new is to get in 303 as I've never owned a 303.
Plus those Ruger gunsite scout are a heavy heap of junk and I couldn't make it semi or fully takedown.

Having reloaded for 303 for over 50 yrs and 308 for 40+ yrs i have learnt several things.
My go to work rifle is a No5. Which is a reworked black powder shooter firing 215 gn projectiles updated to 174gn projectiles being pushed by cordite. 30" barrels cut to 24.5" then 20". I tried 124gn, 135gn and 150gn projectiles with many powder combinations conclusion the 303 is not a varmint shooter. 174gn and 215gn projectiles work .The cordite flame cuts the barrels to a point that can not be corrected with other powders. and short bearing surface projectiles. In short my No5 is very good for what it was designed to do. Barrel twist comes into play with barrel length.
My Ruger Mk11 paddle stock shoots 110gn and any thing else up to 200gn vey well ( never been higher). The only down side is the mag size ( to small). The Gunsite is tinny in comparison but works the mag is larger and probably exchangable for larger ones.
Take down of the No5 Mmmmm easier than the Gunsite but chassis makers do good deeds for newer models My take is the No5 and 303 is what it is at the end of the evolution line. The 308 has more development potential with better parts supply and less quirks.

Elwood Epps in Ontario, Canada made its early and global reputation as a Lee Enfield customizer. They did things like create the .303 Epps cartridge. They make a side mount scope mount that allows one to keep the iron sights. You may wish to contact them.

Yes sidemount might be the way to go, if it's up gut hig enough I might even be able to use the open sights with the scope still on.

I’ll see about digging out the No 4 MK 1 later this weekend and post a pic of the Epps side mount that my dad had put on his Enfield. I think it’s something that’ll work for you…..

Cheers, that might be perfect, it's a shame that you can't get a qd set up.
The closest I can think of is qd rigs on one of the no drill mounts, but then there's no point in having sights on it.

I was thinking something like this in the end, but with the military style butt stock with the brass plate.

Yes it could be a QD mount….. instead of screwing it in to the left side of the receiver with regular head screws/bolts, one could use screws/bolts with knurled knobs that could be turned out by hand……. Voila, mount and scope off gun and into pocket within a half a minute or less. Repeatability of sight in? I don’t know….. one would need to play….. No big deal…. We all like to shoot lots of ammo as practice/experimentation!!!!!

It shouldn't be out by too much, but since it will only be 100m Max pig gun then precision won't be the most important thing.
But then as the open sights would only be a backup option its even less of an issue.
