Savage 99 .22 Hi-power with provenance
      #346435 - 02/11/20 05:48 PM

A photo in the 'Hunting in Asia' forum has prompted me to share the details of a marvellous little '99 take-down in my custody these past couple of decades. A fitting reminder since the rifle is now over a hundred years old.

Being a sucker for interesting provenance, I just couldn't resist this little gem, even though the seller had a more recent example he was trying to talk me into at the time.

Hope you enjoy the 'ripping yarn'...

Certainly has travelled the world that one!

Marrakai,
That is a great story about a very interesting rifle. I always liked the Savage 99 in 22 IMP. I have had custody over & enjoyed two but none with a history like yours.

Quite a story indeed. Tks. I had a Savage 99 take-down when I was in basic training, although it was in .300 Savage calibre.
I was loading for it while in barracks, using a Lee Loader, with IMR 3031 and 130gr. Speer HP's. I was using it for jack rabbits
and coyotes out on my 'cousin's' ranch, South of Moose Jaw, Sask. It was about 25 sections at that time. but has almost all been sold off, now.

Hi Marrakai

I also have a similar takedown .22HP Savage 99, serial no. 335xxx from 1931. It was retailed my Manton's of Calcutta, India and is cased. The rifle cost 165 rupees and the case cost 50. It would have been exported direct from the USA to India to avoid British taxes.

It was bought by a Captain Gordon, a Scot who was in the Indian Army Medical Corps. He no doubt used it for some hunting whilst on leave. It cam back to London in 1947 when India became independent and went into storage with W. W. Greener, according to a sticker on it. I presume that the storage costs stopped being paid and so it was sold off. I bartered an Elgin Cutlass pistol for it and some other bits about 15 years ago.

It had four original cartridges in the case, which I chronographed at 2,750 fps, exactly as advertised. It shoots like a dream and is easy to reload for, using S&B Czech components.

Somewhere I have a photograph.....

HB

I like your"story guns"
Thanks for the share.

There's an action that's been knocking around for years on a tooling shelf in the shop.
I often think about doing something with it.

Maybe some day.

I had 1899 Savage once in .22HP TD model "H" like showed in the artical.

I shot good...sometimes...:LOL

The gun was basically new in condition. Factory ammo from RWS I could be lucky to get two shots grouping ok at 50meters...but the third shot always went wild. I also reloaded for that gun using Speer .227bullets...but that didn`t do better either.

I kept the for some years as I liked it..but eventually sold it to give room for something that was better.

I have always wanted a 1899 Savage again...but this time a.303 Savage or a .38-55

One of these .22 Hi-Power Savage lever actions would make a really nice roo rifle.
