Some interesting pieces for a museum. I wonder if any of the hand held harpoons guns have any modern application?

the kongsberg gun puzzled me last time for making its way to australia. the owner zane grey was an avid fisherman and many times in australia and new zealand so it would be possible he had bought it there

1935

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zane_Grey

but was the jarman realy available then? I had to look for it agains and yes its the model 28 was in production from 1928 to 48 http://www.kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Fangst&weaponid=FANG0001
wonder which ways the international gun trade was going then.

Whaling Gun model 1928 Jarmann, Complete Set, 10,15 mm Jarmann

In Norway infantry rifles type Jarmann have been elaborately altered for whaling to harpoon and line throwing devices. 50 cm heavy rifled barrel with original calibre, shortened stock, sturdy buttplate of lead (to reduce recoil by the weight of the gun) covered with rubber, in the sturdy original wooden box with plenty of accessories: various harpoons, line drum of brass holding a rope and an originally packed spare rope, signal buoy for line throwing to a vessel, cleaning kit, etc. This unique and rare gun has never been offered on the market in such completeness. No proof, condition III..

I realy love the M92/93/95 Mannlicher rifle and learn they were made also into harpoon guns.
it seem the old 19.century jarmann blackpowder rifle became finally scarce in the kongsberg factory after ww2. kongsberg used first left over second line rifles from the wehrmacht like the hungarian M98/40 and dutch M 95 for made the M 48

got a new heavy barrel for shooting the old 11,15x61R carridge, probably only single shot than

http://www.kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Fangst&weaponid=FANG0003

the harpoon rifle build with a M 98/40 action seems even more rare
http://www.kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Fangst&weaponid=FANG0002

after the exotic actions were used up they take the common 98 k action and called it M 52

http://www.kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Fangst&weaponid=FANG0004

in all there were made 3000 M 48 and M52 But I would say that not more than 500 M 48 were made - rare they are today

Two things about this thread:

1. I can't believe in two pages of posts over the years no one with a sense of humour succumbed to the temptation to post a picture of Captain Quint with his Greener.

2. Since these guns are also used for line-throwing, I'll share a story. When I was an apprentice, one of my supervisors told us about working in the machine shop at the local naval dockyard. The shop was located right on the jetty, where the destroyers tied up. They were in the habit of shooting a line to the dock, for the men on land to pull the mooring lines over. One day, the "marksman" involved missed his mark and shot it straight through the machine shop window. Without missing a beat, the shop sweeper grabbed a white(ish) rag, tied it to the end of his broomhandle, and waved his improvised white flag out the broken window in surrender.

The captain sent apologies on behalf of his ship (and possibly a peace offering, unofficially).

I remember the monthly gun shows in Vancouver, British Columbia back in the 80's and 90's. There was a fellow who month after month brought the same minty in the box Greener Harpoon gun, but no one ever seemed interested. I met an old whaler there one day. He told me how many whales his ship got in the last year of legal whaling off the west coast of Vancouver Island, and it was a huge number. When I expressed surprise, he said, "Well, there was a lot more of them in those days."
