Just Back from Range With New Acquisition
      #301438 - 06/06/17 08:56 AM

Yesterday I managed to pick up the serial # 1830 New Haven Connecticut Winchester Model 70, 30GOVT06 (stamped on the barrel) with 24" barrel, in as-new condition. This is one of the rifles of my late friend Sandy, a retired S/Sgt. RCMPolice.

It had a backwards mounted Lyman Aperture sight on it, as received, hence the unsightly divot in the stock on the left side. Sandy had a local friend and gun smith, blue and refinish the stock, oh well.

Last night I poured over the books, and remembering Sandy saying this particular M70 liked 165's, I loaded up some 165 SST's with H414 and Fed 210 primers.

Below is the first target I shot, using the factory semi-buckhorn sight with small bead front sight - holding the forend, resting the back of my hand on the BR.

I used an old 3-postion 200 yard target from the 70's than I've used a number of times, getting shot up a bit.

I fired 3 rounds into the bank to get a rough elevation setting for the rear sight. It was a good 1 1/2 feet high for the first shot. After adjusting, 2 more and I couldn't tell where they fell in the gravel- looked like a big hole.

1st 3 rounds on target are the top 3, with black cloth behind to show the holes. 3 shots in 1.798". I loosened the rear sight leaf, lowered it and fired the last 4 into 1.632". I am so tickled with it's accuracy, so far.

A friend of mine has an almost new in box 4X Lyman Alaskan from close to that era and it is going on this rifle- or I may just leave it with only the open sights - I have not decided yet.

I absolutely love this rifle!

Daryl,
Nice score, looks like made in 1936 and still has the original rudder style safety.
At least whomever did the blue and stock refinish did a nice job of it, a keeper for sure.

I have a similar one, still original blue & stock finish, that is 1940 vintage with a receiver sight and marked 30GOVT06 as well. Such nice "old school" feel to them and I have no interest in mounting a scope on the old girl. Mine shoots quite well with Nosler 180 Accubonds.

Once I drift the sight over a tich, and get the elevator the right height, I might not scope it either. I'll decide after I see the scope.

It just feels so nice - the fit is perfect for me, snaps up to the shoulder and the sights are on my target.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "backwards mounted Lyman Aperture sight", but Model 70 sights are designed to be installed on the left side. If you mean that a Mauser sight was installed in place of a Model 70 sight. there are plenty of Lyman 48 sights available on the used market. If you can't find one, I'm sure I have one I can spare. The improvement in accuracy over the open sights is significant.

I used to shoot competitively, and my rifle of choice was a pre-War Model 70 based .308 Winchester target rifle. The pre-War bolt action is incredibly smooth, even compared to other Model 70's, and for that reason I have always preferred them to the post-War version. I have shot more than one perfect score at 200 and 300 yards, rapid fire, and at 600 yards, slow fire, with that rifle, using iron sights.

The safety has never bothered me, and even if it did, it is easy enough to alter it to the other side with an after market Tilden safety, which shouldn't be hard to locate. A Model 70 collector might be happy to swap you one for your original pre-War safety.

Mike, that is the sight the stock was inlet for, however what was there, is the sporter version, slightly smaller & yes- it is the 98 version. Thus when mounted on the left side, the threaded ghost ring is then bass-ackwards.

While a bit stiff in operation to initially engage, I'm just fine with the safety, though.

It's funny, at the show, some of the guys were complaining about the safety. I told them I was sure it was original.

There were 2 of these pre-war, 30GOVT06 there for sale. The other one was drilled and tapped for a side mount.

Your rifle, Mike, in original condition is very nice. Mine looks as if it just came off the assembly line with a custom finish. The gun smith did a pretty job finishing it & beautiful on the bluing, with no oval-ing of any holes or stamping. A bit of rotten stone will tone it down 'some', but I kind of like it as-is.

1936 eh - well, I like it even more now.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I was REALLY tickled with the first group, and after moving the sight blade down a tich, even more happy with the second 3, then fired another and it went into the group as well. It seemed difficult to find the middle of that big black with the sights, but seems to have worked OK.

Even if it only shot 1 1/2" with a scope, I'd still have been happy. It's certainly good enough for the ranges I normally shoot.

Oh yeah - next time I get out to the Blackwater range, I plan on planting a 165SST on that buffalo. Even with the fairly high wings on the rear sight(maybe 350 yard zero), I expect to have to hold up a bit of barrel over the tops, then place the bead on the buff. IT will be done, if not just to freak out the 'other' guys. LOL!

It just does not get any better than that, except maybe with the model 1876 Winchester Cenntenial .50-95.

I expect to use that fella at the cowboy action shoot this weekend coming up, on Sunday's challenge match.

BTW - this Model 70 is going elk & whitetail hunting with me this fall. I've never been so 'tickled' with the purchase of a modern rifle, before.

Just looking through a Winchester book I have and the front sight ramp is forged with the barrel. Interesting!

Yes - Homer - "Interesting" and "What a Score". Not as good as my Bro's recent purchase, but special, none the less.

Was over at Wholesale Sports today & there is nothing in that rack, running from the cheapest modern bolt rifles to the most expensive Sakos, Brownings or Weatherbys, etc. that comes close to this new rifle of mine.

That it seems to want to shoot, is a bonus.

Now that is a nice rifle. At one time I had a ww2 transition model with the second type of safety. Not nearly as early as yours. Well done.

It's nice you were able to pick up an old friend of an old friend. Plus, it shoots good, too. No wonder you're a happy fellow.

The scope a friend gave/loaned me for load testing, NIB - including the hinge lid, satin lined box.
I will be putting the aperture sight on after it arrives from xausa. It is at Canada Customs now.

Well, I didn't get out hunting this fall. We spent 2 months driving across Canada with the F350 and new trailer, then down to Virginia to visit Curl and Mrs. Curl, then across the States and up to Montana to say hi to Dan Phar. and Ripp, then home on the 30th Sept. With time to unravel from the trip and put everything away for the winter, it was time for the next venture. We totaled 19,200 km and 4,200 liters of diesel.
Dec. 15th found us in Kihei, Maui.

Many thanks to xausa for sending me the Lyman Aperture sight for the 1936 M70'06.

Tks Rod. Yes - So pleased. Hopefully it will go hunting this coming fall.
