My almost new 1950 Savage 99

Picked this up off GB a month ago figured I share.....the ad only said 99 savage 300 savage, had only one picture so from that and a phone call, I bought it and was very surprised what showed up........ a almost flat new 1950 model 99 Savage EG, 95% plus would say more but close enough. I am not sure just how hard it is to find one in this shape but in 35 plus years haven't seen one this nice in person or not behind glass. Not the best pictures but here is a few

Interesting enough about 15 or so years ago while I was in the Marines ,my Dad got a survey from the Montana fish and game asking hunters who killed Elk the previous season to which caliber was used during the kill and how many shots were needed (including misses ,previous misses and follow up shots)to take an Elk during the season. Hunters were asked to be honest with the survey. My Dad had used a 30-06 to kill his .I read the findings of the survey that Montana Fish and Game sent him back and I remember the caliber with the least shots used was the .300 Savage at 1.3 shots per Elk . The worst by far was the 7mm Remington magnum with 8.3 shots per Elk and the 300 Magnums (unspecified which one) was next worse with 7.5 shots per Elk. The commission came to believe that hunters with magnums were shooting at animals out of range . What this showed me is the .300 Savage in the hands of an experienced hunter is quite a deadly killer and your Savage 99 is most certainly a fine weapon.

its allways said that bad shooting is a common symptom of magnumitis

this savage is an interesting action but very rare in this region

Do tell us more about your Savage 99! In particular what is the serial number?

Four years ago I bought a similar rifle, serial number 6162xx, at auction here in England. It had spent its previous life in South Africa, and due to a change in their law limiting the total numbers of guns per household (?) it had to be sold. Mine is not as immaculate as yours, but not bad, and is fitted with the Bausch & Lomb Balvar variable (2.5 - 4) scope. This has no turrets, but the mounts are adjustable. The image is brilliant. I have fired about 400 rounds with it, and have found a comfortable load with a 150 grain bullet at 2500 fps. More is available if needed, of course. It will group to 1.5" at 100 yards all day.

Don't believe it, John- why, with a 7mm Mangulum, you can one shot elk at 700yards - see it on WILD TV all the time. Actually I removed that channel from my list - too much long range bullshit for me - with new guys showing up that the range with new 7mmmags and .300 Mags. because "a guy on TV killed an elk at 800yards with one - it's easy with these guns!"

They can't even put 3 consecutive shots on a target within 3" of one another at 100 meters off the bench - but - "that's OK, it's not for shooting at 100 meters anyway - it shoots better at 700!"

Nice Savage! - Had one in .300 Savage (rotary mag and brass cocking indicator pin on the top of the tang) when when I was in basic training. I used to load (at Depot Div) 110gr. Sierras and shoot jackrabbits with it on my cousin's ranch - South of Moosejaw, Sask. on Sunday's.

I'd be shootin' that rifle!

not that it not kill the tiger but a little bit more energy would be fine

Actually that famous tiger photograph was a publicity photo used by the factory. That rifle was chambered for the then-new .22 Savage High Power with 70 grain bullet, back in 1915. Funny how it took NATO 40 years to end up back with a 70 grain bullet.....

would the action be good enough for modern full nitro loads? I think when the rifle was made this old blackpowder round was not loaded to hoot.

This on rifle has been sold with 350 SEK (~54 US$) IMO these Savages are interesting rifles but I don´t like their outfit.

They are different to be sure Igorrock. The Savage is also stronger than the Winchester action and some will say the strongest of all the lever actions but I am not an expert. I do know they are reliable however.
