Prewar double rifle
      #241777 - 05/02/14 11:40 AM

I just posted this one on AR, rifle built by John Wilkes "to the trade" for Midland Gun Co. in .475 3 1/4 NE (Straight)...my guess is 1908-1925, regulated for 75 grains cordite and 480 grain bullet.

Now THAT is what a proper working rifle is supposed to look like!
Very much like a Jeffery but without the Toy Tigers on the sides. I prefer the scrollwork.

I have to agree completely, early game scene engraving was terrible, much better with the scroll work. Looks like a very nice gun.

Very nice rifle indeed!
Built by highly respected maker and chambered for a great cartridge.
It certainly has the look that makes you want to load her up and take her hunting.
Thanks for posting and please let us know how she shoots.

Being a Wilkes, I s'pose it weighs 11 lbs or more. Makes the over-450 nitro cartridges a bit more comfortable to shoot.

Is that a crack in the top of the wrist? Should be checked very carefully before lighting the fire!

Some pre-century doubles to keep this going. It's taken me 9 years of buying, selling and trading to end up with this pair. They are light, point like a shotgun, trivial to reload and easy on the shoulder. Pretty good killers to.

Top: 1880 ish Lyon & Lyon .500 express Webly hammerless w/ 28" bbls.
Bottom: 1893 Holland & Holland .35 WCF (used to be a .303) Webly back action w/ 28" bbls.
