Whilst nowhere near the quality of some recent posts, I bought this last week

.577 doubles are not common (AFAIK) in the UK and I could not resist it, I have engraved rifles so can live with it!

Very plain with no engraving it was retailed by Isaac Hollis & Sons although almost certainly made by W & C Scott who made many double rifles for better known names

Dating is difficult as the I Hollis address is not full enough to detail but 1880 - 1895 is probable

The case hardening is clearer around and especially under the hammers

Very plain but nice fences

Third bite, usual on W&C Scott doubles

Minimum address, 3 leaf unmarked sights

Bores are very good

Birmingham proofs

A nice touch - the "low light"? sight

Barrel length is 26 3/4 inches, I will shoot it when I get time!

Great looking rifle, really neat cartridge too.
Get it running and let us know how it shoots!

Have you cast the chambers and slugged the bores yet?
I'll bet you can likely steal CptCurl's load for his 577BPE if the critical dimensions check out.

What is the case size of the .577 BPE again? The 2 3/4" case?

Do you plan to hunt with it, shoot with it, or for a collection?

Primarily for my collection but it should be shot! I would not get authority to use it on any UK game. (Largest around here is the small Roe Deer, 3 feet at the shoulder - a trifle over gunned!!)

Weight is 12 lbs 5 oz, may need a bearer for long trips!

It is the 3 inch case, I have a police letter stating it is obsolete calibre but I have a space for a .577 rifle on my certificate so I will shoot it when on cert

I already have a .585 610 grain mould so the original Eley and Kynoch loads of 167 grains BP can be worked up to. This gives 1650 fps and will need Daryl's shoulder pad!!
If Curl is good enough to post/send me his loads I wuold appreciate it

That is a classic looking English double rifle and a great weight for a .577 3". Good find and that is a keeper!

Good one, TH44 - I use a PAST magnum pad for all bench shooting with my larger than .30 cal. CF rifles.

While that little .577 is shooting about the same powder charge, it's 610gr. bullets outweigh my 'Gentle Lady's' 480gr. balls. Have fun!

I'd be wearing a shoulder pad as well.

Just a great rifle. Very good show. Hammer, double, Jones....my favorite pattern.

Just a question to the crowd, 12lbs seems heavy for a BPE ??? may it be a Nitro ??? Not marked than way, but me being very unknowing on these............But then again a friend has a Coggie in 450/400 that weighs 14lbs, so ??????

How much do the barrels weigh? Might be near the upper limit weight wise for the 577 BPE.

Nitrox - very interesting link, using nitro powders a 2 3/4 inch case could be loaded to equal the 3 inch for all practical purposes

Caprivi - as the date of manufacture is uncertain, if later - 1890s, it could have been built for nitro, (I believe the .577 Nitro express was introduced around 1898 by H&H?) the Nitro Proof did not come into use until 1904, IIRC??
[BTW when H&H examined my ball gun their only criticism was that the later nitro proof was unnecessary - especially in ball guns & rifles!]

Gatsby - Barrel length is 26 3/4 inch, weight of barrels 7 lb 5 oz, total weight 12 lbs 2 oz (not 12 lbs 5 oz as I posted)

That's a very nice rifle and would be fine for your small deer!

My rifle is a 2.75" version. You will need to do a bit of tinkering and shooting to develop a proper load for your rifle. These things tend to be individualistic. One caution I will mention: my rifle will not tolerate the use of Varget. In Marrakai's article you will see that is the powder he uses. But he is using a jacketed bullet of greater weight than mine. I got hangfires when I tried Varget. My supposition is that my paper patched bullet gives less resistance at the leade than a heavier jacketed round.

Barrels are heavy enough for a nitro load. 6 or 7 drams black and the 600gr+ bullet.
