Beautiful action for a hunting rifle. Not strong enough for many rounds, it will do very well with Improved shaped ctgs. and especially larger bores, ie: .358 through .375 or even to .400.

I don`t agree with you that a krag won`t be strong enough for many rounds, up here krag rifles are extremely common and was used for competition shooting for decades. Replaced now by the sauer 200str. They are not strong enough for the highest pressure loads, but if you keep the pressure down they last forever. I pretty sure norma has reloading data especially for the krag action, at least in 6,5*55 and I also believe they have it for 8*57.

bakposten - the right to disagree is yours, however, what I said is true - would you like a list of 'many' rounds that produce too much pressure for the Krag's single lug action?

I agree they that they don`t last long when used with regular pressured ammo, but if you only use ammo that are "suited" for the krag action they last forever. I know of several that has atleast 20,000 rounds in the action, some new barrels though. But With regular pressured ammo they die fast. And many of them don`t like rain and moist conditions as well, they usually shot a bit different when wet.

Bakposten and Daryl, you are talking about two completely different Krag actions, the US one and the Norwegian. The american is a much weaker action, relying on just one locking lug. The Norse Krag has effectively two lugs, as the bolt guide rib bears on the receiver bridge too. The actions are so much different that probably not a single part is interchangeable. AFAIK when in WW2 Norway was occupied by the Germans, they tried to produce Norse Krags in 8x57IS at the Kongsberg arsenal. these prooved to be insufficiently strong for the then current German military loads.

My questions might seem a bit strange but I have not seen or handled a Krag.

505t how does the balance feel with the magazine sticking out the side?

How do you carry the rifle with one hand with the mag sticking out to the side at the ballance point?

Is the calibre 30-40Krag or another cal?

Cheers

Greg

Krags balance just fine when your in a proper shooting stance, just like any other rifle.
As far as carrying one in the field it can be a bit cumbersome just like carying my favorite
model 8 but you just hold it a bit forward from a nomal carry point. And I also would dare
anyone who has ever handled a Krag to dispute the action on a clean working Krag as being the slickest bolt action ever made ( its like glass) dispite
its downfall as a military weapon with the side mounted box..... lol
and yes this onE is 30US aka 30-40krag

Regards, RMJ

505T thanks for the reply. I have carried SMLE's and SLR-L1A1 with the box magazine hanging out the bottom and just wrap the first 3 finger & thumb around the stock as normal with the last finger on the mad. Just didn't know if that would work with the Krag.

Some of the Shultz and Larsen rifle blokes might like to argue with you over the slickest bolt. I wont as have shot a S&L but not the Krag.

Lovely rifle, RMJ. Classic Americana as my friend Paul put it! Thank you for sharing.
