For quiet, I've used the CCI CB Long.
They're very accurate and more quiet than an air rifle from my Anschutz.
I'll have to try these too, perhaps compare them over a chronograph.

Over here we have Winchester Z-Longs (or Zimmer now I think) which appear to have similar specs to the CCI but with the shorter long case. I haven't tested the accuracy under fair distance and conditions (I've only tried them at 50 yards but accuracy wasn't real good as a result of the variable wind on the range - on that day couldn't even get the accuracy out of the rifle with the standard velocity standard ammo that it likes).

They must have a longer bullet - ie: longrifle bullet if accurate. I'd always though that most guns with 16" twists wouldn't like the long's, 29gr. '.22 Short' bullet. Rifles designed for the Short's shorter, lighter bullet are usually 24" twists, aren't they?

Of course the requisite range might be within this round's accuracy window. An inch at 50 isn't too bad.

They might be good for indoor plinking.

I have been using the old "zeds" on sparrows that have tried to settle in on my parrot feeding station.
They are shooting 1 inch low at 10 yards which is the ave distance.They dont disturb the parrots which is a real blessing.I will chuck this Gangy in from another time.

I have tested all the "quiet" 22 ammo in my BRNO 2 and my Walther KKJ and have found the CCI CB long to be the best; quiet ,accurate and deadly!

I use another "method", to keep my .22LR firearms Quite!
Luckily for me, I'm allowed to make and use them!!!

In testing, they don't have any noticeable effect on accuracy and POI, with the rifles I've tested them on!

There's one good way to make them quiet and to retain your accuracy - a suppressor.

I would if we could. That's a good shooting sporter, Curl.

Nice group. Even better than my agg's with my rebarreled 10/22. It's agg'd .222" at 50 yards, smallest group .185". The .17HMR Martini does better than both, but is noisy, of course - agg'd .175", best of .153" matching that .22. THAT's gread for .22.
Sorry - that group got me excited - love to see rimfires shooting like that.

Appears to touch the 3/8" line which would make it .375" - .222" = .153" - or .154" if .223" groove diameter.

Silencers on rifles, both 22RF and big bores, are very popular in NZ now. The best ammo I find for the 22RF is the standard sub-sonic LR ammunition preferably with a 40gr hollow point bullet. As all sub-sonic 22RF have much the same MV of about 1040fps the heavier bullet seems to make most semi autos operate reliably. I find the Winchester sub-sonic with the 40 gr bullet and big hollow point is very accurate and a good killer at normal ranges for small game with the 22RF and they work very well in my Gevarm semi auto. This same ammo is great in the Ruger 10/22 as well, one of our most popular 22ZRF rifles in use today.

Many hunters using cartridges suitable for our deer, tahr and chamois animals are now using silencers which obviously reduce noise but also usually some recoil, and most users report better accuracy, probably more due to less noise and recoil rather than any real effect from the silencer on bullet flight or what ever. Often the bigger bore barrels are shortened slightly to keep overall length reasonable and maybe a new crown job does improve accuracy of some rifles when a silencer is fitted.

Silencers used to be 'illegal' in NZ all though not actually by law just by Police intolerance of them because of a misguided notion they would be used by criminals and where they were sold and used, they were called suppressors. A more realistic approach and changing of the old guard in our Police and Government have seen an acceptance of the use of silencers and are very much promoted and encouraged now in some circles from a health and safety point of view for protecting the hearing of shooters and bystanders.

As far as I'm aware they are not 'required' anywhere in NZ for hunting although this may change for some shooting clubs or on some shooting ranges.
