Wet weather 30 cal

Hi

I am looking around for something in 30.06 to have as a wet weather rifle. Synthetic stock and either stainless or coated barrel. I mention coated barrel as Sauer have a 202 synthetic that looks nice although I have not looked seriously at it yet. It has an "Ilaflon" coated barrel.

I would appreciate any thoughts on the Sauer or any other suitable rifle.

There are some cheap stainless and composit stocked Savages & Stevens out now. The Apex is one.

I had the same "problem".
I ended up with the Tikka T3 Lite Stainless.
Very light i.e. nasty recoil but if you carry the rifle a lot then it's perfect.
Check if they import the laminated version to Australia. It's a tad heavier so it'll be better to shoot (and it's much better balanced) but still quite weather-resistant and light to carry.
The plastick stock of the Tikka is incrdibly noisy. It must be hollow as anything that hits it (e.g. the sling) makes a loud noise.

Other alternatives - the Browning. The A-Bolt is being discontinued in favor of the X-Bolt so you may get good deals. I have three friends that have the A-Bolt and they're plenty pleased. We often hunt in poor conditions as autumn means rain and/or snowslash.
The X-Bolt seems a better and smarter gun but I have yet to actually shoot one.

The Sauer has a grand reputation, indeed. You will not go wrong with one I believe.
Try to shoot one before you buy to see how you like it.

Take a look at a Win M70 Extreme Weather. Excellent build quality, relatively lightweight and not all that expensive for what you're getting.

G'Day Fella's,

375 BRNO, (Mmmmmm Doh Nuts!), the Sauer 202 is a really nice rifle and the Ilaflon is the same coating, that Glock apply to their pistol slides and barrels. It is a very durable coating.

An other way to go, is to get whatever type of rifle you may prefer (blued or stainless) and get Geoff Baker at www.slrcoatings.com.au (in Capalaba Qld), to apply a Cerakote spray on finish to it! This to is a very durable and impervious to the wet weather, coating! I personally apply the Air Cured version of Cerakote, to the firearm suppressors that I manufacture and my own firearms! It's good !!!

To give you a bit of an insight into Cerakote, the Toyota factory finish on my old L/Cruiser wiper blade frames had started to fail (after 20 years) and they were rusting. So I bead blasted them and Cerakoted them! That was 2 years ago and they are as good as the day it was applied! This vehicle, spends most days parked outside in the weather and puts up with winter frosts and rain and Summer heat (but not this so-called mild & wet Summer?)!

I`m not happy with my air cured cerakote at all Homer.

Haven't tested mine out in very wet conditions yet, but the Mauser M03 Extreme model may fit the bill with a .30 calibre barrel.

Mine with a 8x68S barrel is for these sorts of hunts.

Reasons I picked the M03.

1. A pre-owned as new rifle was available at a good price.

2. Solid real rifle.

3. Used one before and found it quite OK.

4. The Sauer has an alloy action I believe (?) though also steel actions on some models.

5. I like the Sauer takedown models as they are shorter for travelling, but also twice the price I paid.

6. The decocker/safety on the Mauser is sometimes criticised, but I have found it OK. It is not noisy if operated properly and doesn't catch your finger as claimed if used rightly.

7. I probably would find the Sauer acceptable to own as well. Maybe even a Blaser if I played around with one for a while. I don't like the Blaser's low capacity magazine. Nor the R8's combined trigger magazine, which I think is a crazy idea.

Kimber Mod 84L. I have a timber 30-06 Mod 84L. Montana would be great in 30-06.

I have a cerakoted Mod 84M in 260Rem. Love it!

I think it is a cute little action too! Plus no extraneous weight.

The job done on my 308NM,it seems to wear and chip fairly easily Homer..I`m rough on mine when I`m sambar hunting in bush etc but I was led to believe that it was rock hard,perhaps the oven baked is ,the air dry isnt afaik.

G'Day Fella's,

Gryphon, I have only applied the baked on Cerakote to two rifles (barreled action, t/guard, scope bases and rings,etc etc etc). I'm left with the impression that the baked on version, may end up being a bit thinner in coating thickness, once it has dried but the 5 day air cured, is definitively the most robust of the two.

Given that, I have chipped a few small bits of Cerakote (oven cured), from the bolt handle of one of these rifles as well! I was a bit surprised also but a quick re-application, next time I'm doing a job should fix that! That won't be of much help to you though, eh Gryph!

As to my suppressors, it copes an absolute flogging heat wise and also constantly expanding and contracting (from heat and individual shots & bursts), and comes up smiling! The hotter you get the Air Cured Cerakote (within its physical parameters), the tougher it actually becomes!

Not sure if I can be of much more help to you, other than to say contact the person that applied it to your firearm, and see what they say! ?

Have to say, there's not a mark on my Sako I had done with the oven bake variety after a few knocks and scrapes. The guy that applied it also showed me an old barrel he had rolling around in his truck after he first tested the coating, and although it had clearly taken a battering, the coating wasn't chipped or worn through! It is impressive stuff, IMHO. No idea on the air cured one though - thought that was only for stuff you couldn't put in the oven.

I'm wondering if the person that applied the Two Part oven cure Cerakote to your rifle, has used Old Cerakote? All Cerakote has a 12 month shelf life (from purchase date) and I don't know what happens to it after that 12 months is up!
The shelf life of both types can be extended by ?? months, if you store the base materials in a fridge (@ 4 degrees C).

Hope that may help solve this puzzle!

Thanks for that reminder Rule 303!
As Rule 303 infers, you can't use normal Glass Beads (aka; Inda) to blast the to-be Cerakoted surface!
I use Garnet and you can also use Aluminum Oxide, as these are both slightly more aggressive than Inda!

From what Geoff was telling me if the surface is not cleaned properly the cerakotes durability is affected. Might not be much help but might explain why as might Homers explination.

Homer i only just read your post re the Cerakote.

I`m led to believe that the operator had to wait for new black to arrive so I believe it was fresh enough.

Anyold how I have carried a mod 70 for over 30 years in Victoria's sambar country in winters of rain,frosts,ice and snow and I`m still doing so,in fact I carried her two nights ago for the first time in 2012 looking for a pot animal.She will do winter again this year of course and hasn't missed a beat.

Oh and that's doing a lot of time in the bush too on ave six days a week,just about every evening!
We dont really NEED a specialist winter /wet weather rifle do we!

Man whats going on in your head, of course we "NEED" at least two or three specialist Winter/wet weather rifles! I already have a few!!!

Gryph, one of the pleasures of living in an affluent country, is the little (or maybe that is massive) luxuries we can indulge our selves with. Especially when they are Tax Deductible!!!
