A good starter for a carbine style rifle but the short barrel REALLY barks! I put a #2 barrel at 22" and a glass stock on mine c/w BGR iron sights, QD scope mounts and a Parkerised finish. A good bush gun in spades.

Shame my 401K hasn't recovered yet, because this rifle little would be real handy riding behind the seat in my Pick-up...just doesn't have the aggressive appearance of black plastic and picatinney rails.

I've got one of those but in more ratty condition - it doesn't have the cleaning rod and the handguard screws are badly corroded and the corresponding screw holes in the timber are worn/rotted so the handguard flops around at the receiver end, but otherwise stays put and out of way of the rear sight thanks to the barrel band holding it in place.

Also my muzzle was worn thanks to improper repeated cleaning using a pull through (wasn't me) and most shots would miss the target at 50yards (those that did hit were going sideways). I tried a counterbore (fixed the accuracy a bit but not as good as hoped) but ended up cutting off the bad 1/4" end of the barrel, and now it shoots as good as any of my other ex-mil bolt actions.

Ditto on the noise - I wouldn't want to fire it without any hearing protection. It also flashes with the (relatively) slower powders - I noticed this when I used AR2209 reloads through it.

I've always wanted to try it for pig hunting (especially when they are spotted from the vehicle and you need to get out quick) but I've never done it yet. I generally end up using my Remington 700 0.308 though. I have an unmodified Israeli Mauser in 308 that I can use the same loads in, and I take this as a back-up rifle in case the Remington packs it in. I have shot some goats with the Israeli.

This one has a 17-inch bbl and is in 6.5x55, but could easily be .30-06.



And here's another chopper with a 19-inch bbl in 9.3x62. No problems with this tube length and really, I'd like a 16 1/2 or 17 incher in 9.3x57, too.



There's nothing amiss with taking a hacksaw to sundry sporters...

That's effectively what I've got with my Ruger Frontier in .358 Winchester. As much as I love my all-'round .30-'06, that Frontier will be one of the last to go...it's just too handy for chasing pigs through tight cover and with 250-grain SPs it's plenty effective too.

More on the topic, that Columbian carbine is a neat looking piece. I'd bring one of those home if the price were right.

20", for me, is carbine length for rifle ctgs. a 20' .358 will easily do 2,200fps with a 250gr. and handle moose to 200yards very easily - even at 2,150fps mv.

I know what even shorter barrels can do - and even short cartridges like a M94 Trapper .45 Colt. (.44 mag pressure) 1,584fps with 300gr. cast HP's handled 2 elk for me - easily from 100yards, and then with W680(now H116), 340gr. at 1,740fps - same presure - .44mag level 16" bl. BTW - That's .,450 #2 Musket ballistics IIRC.

Short barrels work, but any more, I just can't stand the noise. My favourite hunting rifles now have 24" to 26" bls.

30-06 carbines are pretty near perfect for most hunting where you do much hiking

Looks like a Redfield on a Husky? Is that a Double Set trigger guard, with triggers replaced with a single and is that an Express sight or it's base or military base sweated on? My monitor's not good enough to distinguish them.

No, it is an original Oberndorf Type B sporter in 30-06. And the rock is just one on the beach near the old village of Kanatak on Shelikof straights.

Sville, the designation "diopter" is not used for such a rifle sight in America. Yes, the sight mounted on the rear of the receiver is a "diopter" in European parlance, but called a "receiver peepsight" by Americans. As noted by Daryl, it was probably made by Redfirld, USA. Daryl further asked about the rear sight on the barrel.

hadn't notice the rock before - VERY interesting 'chunk' of history - - with so many stones stuck to and in it, maybe a lump of lava rolling along, almost hard, picking up stones, then abraded by eons of time's water and sand washing over it.? Also, the hardening cracks suggest this - quite amazing, and unique. I'm surprised it's not in someone's yard or made into a coffee table by now.

The orientation of the longer inner rocks is almost all in the same direction, with only a few exceptions.

Cool! Of course, nice rifle, too. Great little packing gun -
