350 Rigby Rimless magnum;

Check out this article from Magnum magazine reproduced on the website www.valhalla-hunting com, go to press releases and then go to Magnum 2.2000 for the article. It is by Colin Greenwood, sometime editor of Guns Review a long defunct UK magazine that my pocket money used to get spent on. It tells of his Rigby built 350 on a genuine Mauser magnum action from 1913 and how he put it back into use.

Greenwood was a senior police officer and wrote extensively on gun control, and fortunately he was pretty much anti control as you might imagine from his retirement job as Editor of Guns Review.

No doubt his book may (hopefully) come back into fashion after the Cumbria shootings covered elsewhere on this forum.

Does Magnum magazine from South Africa have a website by the way?

An easier link would be:
http://www.valhalla-hunting.com/tutte_im...to%20Africa.pdf

Lon Paul currently has my Rigby marked .350 Magnum action, which he is fitting to an original stock and barrelling for me. I also have a .400/.350 Rigby bolt action in the works with an original Rigby action. I'm still looking for another original stock, after missing one by two hours last fall.

That's a good read. Thanks for the post. It certainly shows that the old girls still earn thier place and thier keep.

Yes, an interesting read, thanks for the link guys.
The 350 Rigby mag is a great cartridge for sure. Iv'e wanted one for a long time to go with the 400-350 double I own.
Iv'e looked long and hard at using my Whitworth Express .458 as a donor for a .350 RM project.
One day maybe.

Bruce Bertram runs a rifle in 350Rigby and has collected many of his trophies with it.

I've been quoted on rebuilding an M98 into a 400/350NE and only lack of funds prevents me doing it!
Cheers...

Hi simonsaorsa,

The story was very interesting and the way he was able to have the best of both worlds by going back to the manufacturer was indeed a very sensible thing to do. I also in my younger days remember his articles but that was a long time ago...

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Interesting article - many thanks. I love the appearance of the .350 Rigby cartridge. If any rifle cartridge is prettier to look at than the .375 H&H, it has to be this one.

Simonsaorsa,
Thanks for the article. Taylor rated the 350Rigby Magnum. I do as well, kind of like the 358 calibre.
Greenwood can to Victoria, Australia in the late 80's or early 90's to help campaign against restrictive gun laws. Those who meet him said he was a true gentleman. From memory Bill Woolmore ( Vic SSAA President? and keen hunter) took him out after Sambar.

Cheers
Greg

I still have copies of the two articles he published in Guns Review on this rifle and his hunt, and also a poor copy from the BASC website of an article about restoring a 400/350 rimmed Rigby mauser. Anyone who wants me to scan and send them a copy, send me a pm and I'll be happy to oblige.

Will be on holiday until Monday week, so will reply after then.

Any chance you could just post those articles on the board? I'm sure everyone would be keen to see them.

thanks

I have a .350 Rigby Rimless Magnum on a Dakota 76 action. A good friend of mine built his .350 Rigby on an FN mauser. Using modern powders & a moderate increase in pressure
( approximately 10 o/o ) we were able to improve performance dramatically. I have taken 18 animals from pronghorn antelope to eland using a 250 gr bullet at 2600 fps. Terminal performance on medium to large game is dramatic.

Interestingly enough some years back I saw 2 of Warren Anderson's single square bridge Magnums from Rigby (the retailer). Both rebored to 375 H&H rimless.

Lots of drop in the stock but nice nevertheless. Workmanlike would be an apt description.
