358 norma mag

How meny here use a 358 norma mag? I have one on a very custom 1917 and it shoots way better then I can. just worndering as I have never seen anyone else with one just I uset to have one or had a friend that had one so how meany?

I think it is a great cartridge I have 2 guns this one a custom by Mesa Rifle Works

And this one a custom Giffin and Howe gun

I have just had a 308 NM rebuilt to 358NM, now it wouldnt please all the diehards here.. although it is a Mauser `98 action it has one of those fully ally bedding block Bell + Carlson plastic stocks on it... it will kill like a champion nonetheless.

I will be running 225`s and 250`s through it though I have heard that a 180 gr go`s real flat.............

I usually shoot 250s through mine. The Mesa gun shoots at 1/2 inch at 100yds with just about every 250 I have tried.

There is also an article in Big Bore Rifles & Cartridges (Wolfe) which highly praises the .358 NM cartridge. It's by Jon Sundra.
You may already have seen it.

G'Day Fella's,

Tom N I don't have a 358 Norma Mag but I do have a .350 Rem Mag and from what I can gather, there isn't much difference in them ballistically?

Sure the Norma has to come out on top but.........
They are both really good cartridges!

I'll have to get the chronograph details on velocities with the 250 grainers, out of the "Funshop" but it's locked up for the day.

Ultra heavy loads aside, my BRNO .358 NMag. absolutely thrived on IMR3031. Seems to me the load was 62.0gr. with Speer 250's for around factory ballistics - 2,700fps.

With a 12X scope mounted, I beat a 6x47 bench rifle, group for group, one whole day - while shooting at 100 yards. My largest group was 3/10" on centres, while most were 1/4" and smaller. Both Alex & I were astounded as to the accuracy of that load. Nothing else was consistant at below an inch, but many other loads goruped around an inch. That happened in the early 70's, when a rifle that was a consistant 1/4MOA gun, would win Bench Rest matches. This rifle, with that powder only, was capable.

Mine shoots in the 2750s with 250 grain can't rember the load I would have to go look at the box. I also had a 308 norma on a 1903a3. It didn' shot very well so sold that one off. I like the 1917 action and have though about get one made up with a larger round it would have to be bigger then 375 as their isn't much differns beween it and 358 norma. What can be made up an a 1917 action?

Just about anything you like, particularly when using a P14 bolt. Using the M17 bolt ... 458Lott or 470Capstick would be relatively simple conversions for a competent gunsmith.

One thing that i have gleaned from the Alaskan and various other forums is that the 358NM is a ferocious bastard on lesser quality bullets that may well indeed serve the 35 Whelens/350 RM`s etc well.

Apparently they blow many lesser pills up with their extra power and it is important to use good and top quality pills.

The higher the velocity, the greater must be the bullet's integrity.
200gr. RN's designed to operate from a .35 Rem's 2,100fps, when driven at 3,100fps, tend to become perfect for 100yard shots on coyotes and wolves, if'n you don't want the hides.

Experience speaking here. Kinda like shooting a ground hog with a .264 mag.

what would you say could be a hard 180Gr 358 pill to suit the NM?

I have thought about running a few lesser weights on lesser targets.

Try the 180gr FN Silhoette pills ... tend to be a bit harder. They'll either be wonderful or splat bombs. Either way ... it'll be impressive.

TomN I have a 35Sambar, that is a 300WSM necked up to 358 and its ballistics just about mirror the 358Nm. Woodleigh make 275 grain PP for this calibre. They would perform better out of the 358Nm as you would not be eating into the powder space as much as on the 35Sambar. I would say that if you are after bear or big Moose these would do the job nicely.

I haven't hunted with it just soot targets. I have only hunted with muzzle loaders for the last 20 years or so. but well worth remenbering thanks. TomN

I tried some of the Speer 180's just for fireforming brass - and they shot OK - not stellar.

Any of the .357 Silhouette bullets might be OK for vermin, but might be bad bouncers - if they shoot.

Like Con says, they'll either shoot, or they won't.

I had a great cast bullet load for it using the 250gr. Lyman bullet and SR7625, I think - I could look it up - did this work with the .358, 36 years ago.

Have tryed very hard with the wife to get picturs to load to no aveal. We were at it for abut 2 hours and all we could get loaded was the address but it wouldn't open. Help We have photobuckit.

Put your cursor over the photobucket picture and the addresses should show below the picture. Move the cursor down to the bottom line, then highlight it by left clicking on it, then right click and 'copy'. Go to your post in whatever thread, then left click to put the cursor where you want it, above or below your text, then right click & 'paste'. The picture will show in the 'preview' window before you paste your post it to the thread.
I usually bring up my photobucket album in one window, the site I'm posting to in another. I haven't tried dragging, but even that might work- don't know, just a thought. 2 small windows, one for photobucket on one side, nitroexpress forum on the other makes for easy transfer, so no back-traveling between sites is necessary.

I`ve recently noticed photobucket has changed. When you put your cursor on the pic,and get the four boxes under it. Move your cursor down to the last one,and left click on it to hi-light it. Then right click on it to copy it. Then just right click to paste it on the page here.
