Best bang for the $$$ barrel for a Ruger M77 conversion?
      #99305 - 16/03/08 02:29 AM

Ok I took the advice about which calibers to convert the easiest to 300 H&H. I bought a Ruger M77 in 300 Win Mag. Now I need some advice on which barrel to buy? Should I pop for a Shilen or Douglas? Or is an ER Shaw just as good? What about Pac Nor?

I have used all of them.
I can't say any is better than the others. ER Shaw is cheapest, but you have to wait the longest. I used a lot of Shilen because I could have one in 3 days from Brownells.
One barrel company that i have extreamly good luck with is the cheapest barrel on the market I know of Adams and Bennet from Midway USA. I used about 15 of them a few years ago. The least accurate one I used was a 30-06 re-barrel for a friend's son. It "only" would shoot 3/4" groups at 100! yds. Not bad for a 69 dollar barrel.
Another one I did for the same man was a 270 Winchester and it shot 5 rounds under 1/2", and did so for 3 different shooters in the same morning.

If your inletting is right, and your barrel and chamber work right too, you'll find they all shoot sub-MOA.
For a 300, I would recommend at lease a 24" and a 25 or 26 is probably better if you want full velocity.
Are you going to do the work yourself? If you are not, tell your gunsmith you want the chamber set to only .0015" headspace. I do this will all belted mags except for 416s and 458s. Those i give .003"
Good luck and good hunting.
Steve

Not sure if this was really covered before, but is the .300 Win REALLY a switch barrel-only conversion to .300 H&H or is there any action/rail/mag lip work that needs to be done to get the H&H to feed from a gun originally made for .300 Win??

BTW, Woodbeef, if you want a front sight on this rifle, Ruger told me they no longer make sights for the bolt guns...but...you can order a No.1 sight for A thru D barrel dimensions. IMO the ruger front sight base/band is a nice one and they are cheap from Ruger, about $35.00. Just make sure to have your barrel turned to a dimension that fits one of the stock sight band ID's.

Personally I have used at least a half dozen Hart barrels with great success..also Shilen and Lilja --with the Shilen in a .416 Rem caliber on a Mauser action--shoots awesome..IMHO, if you are going the expense of a new barrel, get the best you can afford, typically you will not be sorry..

My two 458 barrels for a 450 #2 have just gotten to the gunsmith. They are A and B barrels and I will let you know how they work out. I have heard good things about them, but we will see.

Just looked at them today and they look very nice. Bore appears to be very well done and the outside finish is much better than I had expected. You might want to consider A and B barrels.
