Very nice rifle, Mark. I am intrigued by the Tolley 'Giant Grip', as you know. That is the best example I've seen.

Quite unique engraving, too. Fascinating!

Please remind us: what was the charge again? I remember it was bloody heavy! One hell of a stopper!

What a stunning paradox you have there, congratulations. That grade is a special order, and imagine the gun is of royal descent. Is there a crest, or elaborate initials on the stock oval?

Holt's should have given some kind of provence in there description.

Thank you all ,yes it is a awesome beasty thing ,I love it ,

Marrakai - I,m not sure on the load, the least any one has come up with is 8 dram and a couple of chaps who know this stuff said 11 to 12 dram ,with light 600gr to 750gr at high speed 1800 to 2000 Fps ,slow twist 1 in 80in -fixed 100 yard to 300 yard sights, may be ,eh??

Curl - Shit I thought I had good detail was pleased with close up photos ,what were you meaning ?

Sinner - No not paradox ,has full rifeing ,but not deep or normal Bore 722" Groove 735"
no sign of crest or initials -no stock oval ,again I was told it is a best gun !
I,m sorry to say Holts have not been overly helpful ( to say the least ) on the whole thing !

Does any one know who or where Tollys rocords might be ??

Oh, I'm not criticizing the photo you posted. I would like to see more views of the details of the rifle. Action open, water table, barrel flats, etc.

Thanks,

I think you're right, Sarg - the weight is high, and the twist slow, indicating heavy charges and light, short bullets or round ball.
: I wasn't aware 12 bores shot over 7 drams. Is there no load data on the table or barrels?
; The 14 pound + weight surely indicates very heavy powder loading, that's for sure. The twist indicates short bullets or ball.
: Very nice re-finish. The 'fences show nicely and are 'special' I believe.

fences that are chiseled in this pattern or other patterns are called "arcaded fences" by gunmaker Stephen Dodd Hughes in his latest gunsmithing book.

Tbanks for the photos of the table and barrel bottoms. That top wedge is so cool, too. The engraving - well, my heart skipped a beat or two. Such a lucky guy to find that one - and the weight of the breeches - WOW!

Buckbrush:
I haven't seen Stephen Dodd Hughes' book, but just for the record, 'arcaded fences' get their name from
the arched entrance to a typical English arcade in Victorian times, and look like this:

That Tolley has quite unique carved fences, part fluted, part beaded, perhaps part arcaded, certainly 'special' as Daryl says!
The fitting of the Giant Grip third fastener does not lend itself to 'standard' fences, that's for sure!

Again, marvellous gun Sarge! Thanks for the extra photos.

Words can not describe this incredibly beautiful rifle! Is that a snake attacking a bird on the fore end catch? The rifle does not look like it has much ware. I can almost smell the oil & gun powder! Kia Ora

Did you measure the chamber length?? A buddy of mine had a 15 lb. H&H, 4.5" case!! It was a 9 dram gun. I had an H&H 12 which had 3" chambers and was 6-7 drams. Your rifle is beautiful!

jaz : Thank you for the info ,yes 3in chamber ,it may have been a Nitro gun from the start as there are no marks to say other wise & it only has modern Nitro repoof marks !
I suppose if I had some BP I could have filled the vintage brass cases that came with to see what they held with a card & ball ?
Seems a little heavy for a 7 dram gun ??
Unless the guy was a poof ?

Thanks again !

have you looked into the other numbers that are on the gun WR 107160, they might give you an idea if other makers were involved on this tolly, they might even have daybooks. who knows ?
just thought it could give you something.

WR (westly richards) perhaps

good luck

peter
