350 Remington Magnum, Opinions Please
      #6407 - 03/01/04 02:42 AM

I am going on an elk hunting trip october of this year and am still waffling about what gun to take. Right know the gun of choice would be my Winchester Mod 70 in 270 Win. But I am thinking about getting a new gun and I really like the looks and feel of the new Remington 673 Guide Gun chambered in 350 Remington Mag. From looking at the ballistics it look like it will spit a 200 grain bullet about as well as a 30-06 will spit a 180 grain bullet. Have any of you guys had any experience with the 350 Remington Mag. I would greatly appriciate you opinions and experences with that cartridge and that gun if you have one or have shot one.

Thanks
mcb

I used one of the Rem 600's in Alaska when they first came out. I was a Weather Officer with the USAF stationed at Elmendorf AFB and had a lot of time to hunt.

Worked great on several large moose, more than a few caribou, several black bear and 2 brown bear --- all back before they went to alternate years etc and you could get a nice brown bear hunt for less than a $1000 (if you were a resident)...for me it was almost the perfect rifle for Alaska.

I also used one on my 1st safari to Zim and took plainsgame up to the size of kudu and waterbuck with no problem...nothing took more than one shot and nothing ran very far.

I can't think of a better elk rifle if you shoot at reasonable ranges...and I do.

personally I like teh whelen and the norma mag... but there's not much at all wrong with the 350 remmag... except that the only rifles it comes in are remmingtons... which is another subject for another day!

... also, many many many Elk have fallen to the 270, it WILL work. just invest in some good bullets, the 160gr partitions would be a good choice.

Something to think about is Ruger is going to chamber their M77 Mark II standard in 350 Remington mag but I think it is only suppose to have a 20" barrel compared to Remington 673 22" barrel.

It is a short, fat 35 Whalen, and the 35 Whalen is a great ctg!

I have a Ron Webb featherweight Mk 1 Ruger 77 in 358 Winchester with 22 inch barrel.
It shoots 225 grainers at 2500fps which is similar to 350 Rem mag velocity and puts it in the 3000 ft lb of energy class.
Next week however it will be gone as one of my hunting clients has bought it.
It is a very fast handling little rifle with plenty of hit for medium size game.

I have a pair of .350 Remingtons and a .35 Whelen. There is zero difference in the chamberings in the field. For Elk Hunting I would suggest A Barnes X. There is a 180 grain (great for deer) and also 200 and 225 grain. My choice would be the 225. Make positive to use Barnes CRP-10 to clean the barrel before sighting in you handloads. The Barnes bullets are very picky about having a bore clean of all copper residue as the alloy of the X is pretty soft.

That Ol'Guy, Jeff Cooper has used his 350 Mag for big ungulates in NA and for semi-dangerous stuff in Africa. Should be sufficient for any NA game.
