Anyone built a .375 Flanged on a Lee-Enfield?
      #6397 - 02/01/04 08:03 PM

BSA chambered these in .375 Nitro Flanged at the start of last century.
I would like to recreate one, what do you think?

Regards,Shaun.

Yes great idea.

In a SMLE you would have a full ammo box of cartridges too.

Actually I understand they built them on the Long Lee the predecessor to the Smelly. The Long Lee action doesn't have a charger guide.

I don't know what cartridge that is you have next to that 303 but that isn't a.375 2 1/2 NE. Here is what a .375 2 1/2 NE case looks like next to a .303.

I shot up all the loaded ammo I have in .375 NE yesterday or I would have put up a loaded round.

And yes I have thought about building one on a Smelly. I think that the Charger guide can be removed fairly simply. The stocking and barreling is straight forward.

The only tricky area that I see is the magazine. The 375 2 1/2 NE is just slightly longer than a 303. A factory loaded 375 NE won't fit the magazine because the round is to long. The front magazine lips and guide ribs would have to be adjusted or the magazine converted to single stack. The cartridge would then need to be loaded to a slightly shorter OAL.

I think the ".375 Flanged" in the photo at the top is a .375/303 and would fit in a SMLE with a bored out barrel or new one without much trouble.

Ballistics?

Yep,I just necked up a .303.
Here's a pic,the OAL remains the same.
Who has the .303 basic brass? Bertram?

That might be a better way to go except I already have the 375 2 1/2 NE reamer

You know after reading and posting here this morning I had to get out Ghost and the Darkness and look Val Kilmer's rifle over.

I've been looking for this topic and finally found it. Thought there might be more info. There is some talk of the cartridge on the British Militaria Forums under "Sporting Rifles and Other Old Guns".

I've also read Ken Waters and thought that his idea of using the .375 Express (now known as the .375 JDJ) would be fun and useful in the Enfield action.

Unfortunately, I'm a unable to make up my mind with all the potential projects I've got...

DD,

The original 375x2.5" Flanged NE rounds were actually a bit shorter than recent loadings. I have a couple of rounds of Kynoch that I got with my 375x2.5" Flanged H&H (built on a Steyr 1892 action), and it is 3.09 to 3.10 OAL. Here it is flanking a 303 factory load.

I have an Army&Navy marked BSA 303 factory sporter (without charger guide-very similar to the No. 1 Pattern in Far Canel's post), and the mag will accept the few of these rounds that I have without alteration. It even feeds them from the mag. If they were seated to 3.05 OAL I believe that they would work perfectly. If you wanted to crimp in the crimping groove of 270 Hornady RN's you could trim the case length to slightly less than 2.5", or just use the 303 or 30/40 brass that has been run through the 375x2.5 sizing die without trimming. The Buffalo Arms 40/70 SS is actually formed from 30/40 brass at 2.5" in length, and works great in my H&H bolt and double in 375x2.5 Flanged (big savings over Bertram). The 405 Win brass works in the bolt, but is too large at the base for my double (but so is new Westley Richards factory ammo ).

I also have a C. Riggs 303 factory sporter (with charger guide) that would require a very slight bit of modification to the feed lips to work, but nothing that the average hobbyist could not do on his own. I think that this would be a great project for a redo on a Lee-Enfield. I have had great fun with my H&H/Steyr, and if I can find a Lee-Enfield factory sporter with a shot-out barrel I would like to do just this.

Jim

Bigfive,

Sorry, but I don't have a Mark IV to check. I think that it would work, but some of the more experienced Lee-Enfield owners would be better able to advise on this.

Jim
