30R Blaser - Need Help!
      #52515 - 16/03/06 03:36 AM

This may sound strange coming from me, but I need information on the 30R Blaser cartridge. In particular, I need cartridge dimensions.

Also, if anybody has any empty cases they want rid of, I may have a use for them. I would certainly like to have several in hand in the short term for experimental purposes. I may need more, depending on the success of my experiments.

I'll make clear the nature of my interest and experiments in due course. A clue: I won't be using them in a 30R Blaser.

I'm posting this on several forums. Please excuse the repetition.

Thanks,
Curl

I have a box of new RWS brass that I'm going to use to try and modify for a Springfield Krag that has been rechambered to something like a Rimmed 30/06. Blaser is the best case to cut/resize/fireform to fit the chamber. I will give you the mesurements.
OAL 2.678"
Rim 0.527"
base 0.478"
rim to shoulder 2..10"
neck length 0.240"
dim. @ shoulder 0.439"

Hope this helps

TN_Longhunter,

Thank you very much for giving me these dimensions. It helps a lot.

Where did you get your brass?

Could you measure the thickness of the rim for me?

Where did you get your brass?

Thanks,
Curl

On my box of brass the rim is 0.053" thick. I got the brass at the Reloaders Bench in Mt Juliet Tennessee (Sub. of Nashville). Small shop that carries everything. Phone at 615-754-7178 and ask for Jim. Good luck and what are you planning if I may ask?

Don

Don,

Thanks for measuring the rim thickness.

I think the 30R Blaser is a good candidate for conversion to .400/.360 Westley Richards. The size at the head is really close, the rim isn't too large, and it's only about 0.050" short of the nominal length of the WR cartridge.

This idea developed from studying dimension data from Cartridges of the World, and it may not work at all. I just today took delivery of the .400/.360 WR. Further, I've never laid eyes on a 30R Blaser case. I'll know more about the Westley after a chamber cast and bore slug.

Huntington lists RWS cases in 30R Blaser a damn sight cheaper than their Bertram in .400/.360 WR. So far I'm not impressed with Bertram's fidelity to dimensions. If the RWS will work, that's going to be my mainstay.

Here are a couple of photos of the rifle I'm playing with:

I'll give a report on how this all works.

Best regards,
Curl

I got the Westley Richards in hand yesterday and did a chamber cast. I don't think the 30R Blaser will work for this conversion. My chamber differs from dimensions in Cartridges of the World, as I'll explain.

COTW lists the .400/.360 head (base) diameter as 0.483". That prompted me to think the 30R Blaser would be a perfect fit at the COTW dimension of 0.480" (actual measurement by TN_LongHunter at 0.478").

My chamber cast reveals a base diameter of 0.473" - too small to accommodate the 30R Blaser.

Another disappointment is the rim thickness of the Blaser case. The Westley Richards cartridge employs a stout rim of 0.060" to 0.063". Mine is fully that thick, if not a little more. The Blaser rim, at 0.053" is fully 0.010" too thin, which will invite headspace problems.

Oh well, it was a marvelous idea - on paper!

Don, many thanks for going to the trouble of measuring that case for me.

I guess I'm stuck with Bertram.

Best regards,
Curl
