I would prefer the cartridge that drove the development of the 30-06, the 8X57, not much difference between them and the 8mm puts a bigger hole in them.

That said the 30-06 is not to be sneezed at.

Except for the big and dangerous game of Africa, you can use everything that you use at home for your native game species. That also means the cartridges 30-06 Springfield and 8x57IS, but also various 7mm cartridges.

I think the sheer variety of .308” projectiles gives it the upper hand on the 8X57 but for all purposes they are very closely matched.

My square bridge Mauser TypeA is the epitome of a classic African rifle. I love that thing!

I purchased a Mauser M03 in 8x68S as my future all round world hunting rifle. A bit more grunt for larger tougher species and flatter shooting than a .30-06. I did use a borrowed 8x68S M98 custom of Karl Stumpfe's. It worked well when I shot properly. A handfull of warthogs, a hartebeest, springbok, gemsbok. Along with my 9.3x74R.

I would probably use 200 gr or better 220 gr good bullets in the 8x68S. For regular deer hunting a 160 to 180 gr .323 bullet might be a flat shooting choice. I've always been keen on a 250 gr SP well constructed .323 bullet and a 250 gr matching RN FMJ. To emulate the great .330. .318 Westley Richards with a few more fps. Difficult to ID and find suitable bullets.

I killed my eland well with my .30-06 with 200 gr Nosler Partitions. Well placed difficult angled shot from behind to the heart. I had earlier problems with the 180 gr Nosler Partition which were blowing off the front halfs and acting as a FMJ.

As chance happens I still use my customised Parker Hale 1200 M98 in .30-06 most of the time. I know it and how it shoots. One gun familiarity. Used on hundreds of feral goats, numerous feral boars, some Hoppy beasts, fallow deer, red stags, numerous donkeys. Scrub bulls. A wild ram. Camels. Dingoes, Big lizards. Other?

I bought it when still in High School. From Tony Browns Mans World, a barbers shop, with a leather sofa for chatting. Came with 220 gr Norma FMJs I planned for water buffalo. My first trip, but no water buffalo were on the abandoned cattle station we visited.

I will continue to use my .30-06. Almost certainly for my next fallow deer. A shooting non licenced friend (ex Military) I will loan (under supervision) my 6.5x55 to use. Or I will use the 8x56 M-S I must take out for a walk.

Edited to fix Android auto errors.

The .30-06 Springfield? In Africa?

"Osa Johnson, a celebrated filmmaker, author and adventuress from the 1920s and ’30s, is shown with her Griffin & Howe Springfield .30-’06 Sprg on one of her many safaris, during which she guarded her husband, Martin, while he filmed African wildlife. On at least three occasions, she saved his life by killing charging animals. She also supplied meat for the camp, often using this rifle."

.30-06? 8x57? In Africa?

I like both of them.

And besides, Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Ruark, and of course Osa Johnson used a .30-06 in Africa so you know I just had to use one too.

Location: Northern Limpopo Province in South Africa.

My cartridges & rifles:

2002, .30-06
Limpopo Bushbuck taken along the banks of the Limpopo River.
Probably my favorite trophy. The opposite bank is in Botswana.

2002, .30-06

2005, 8x57JS

2005, 8x57JS

Geeeezzz... 2002 and 2005? Where has the time gone? It seems like only yesterday.

Cheers! Bob F.

Back in 1978, guide and outfitter Igor S. carried an 8x57 as backup, loaded with 225gr. Speer RN's. Worked on a grizzly that charged them from uphill. The charge stopped on the 4th shot with the bear turning sideways to receive the 5th shot through both shoulders.
Might have been one miss, but Igor noted the frontal chest shots, 1st 2 or 3 had zero effect.
I was near camp with the other client in a tree stand when this happened but heard the shots echoing through the valley. There was some VERY fast shooting going on from Igor's 8mm. The client, emptied his 7MM Rem. Mag's magazine out onto the ground working the bolt over and over while thinking he was shooting the bear. Weird, quite stressful situation for him, I guess.
I thought I remembered his load as being 54gr. IMR4350 and vel. of 2,450fps.
We also got 6 1/2 and 7 foot black bears that trip, quite large for the area.
