Awesome Custom 338-300 L.N. by Steve Billeb, ACGG Founder / Member

When I saw the listing I couldn't resist adding it to my collection. This is my 3rd Custom Rifle built by a member of the ACGG.

My first one was a 416 Rigby Mauser by Nate Bishop, (see this link) http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=bigbores&Number=276373
http://buckstix.com/buckpics/416forun1.jpg

the second one was an 11.2x72 by James Tucker, (see this link) http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=385391
http://www.buckstix.com/buckpics/imman-0.jpg

and now this 338-300 Win L.N. by Stephan Billeb,
www.buckstix.com/buckpics/BILLEB-338-300-000.jpg

This rifle is built on a highly customized Enfield magnum length action with many modified features as described in the listing. Its also an early wildcat 338-300 L.N. caliber. This caliber is slightly different than a standard 338 Win Mag in that the L.N. stands for "Long Neck". The longer case neck provides more bullet support and more uniform "bullet-pull" for improved accuracy.

The stock design with the wonderful checkering pattern really displays Mr. Billeb's artistic talents. I can't wait to get it in hand.

That is one sweet looking Enfield. Normally I don't like it when they straighten out the dog leg bolt handle as I like them, however this rifle loses nothing in my view. I love the timber in the stock. Well done on that pickup buckstix.

Lovely find once more Buckstix, you have the forerunner to the 308 Norma magnum.
I certainly agree wholeheartedly Rule303 with your statement!
I prefer the old dogleg arrangement, fantastic timber too!
Whoever did the metal work certainly filled in the action very well - or is it a Remington 30 action?

Buckstix is your .338/300 similar to the .338 OKH (Oneil/Keith/Hopkins) or is it based on the .300 Win.Mag case?

Hello. The case is a 300 Win Mag opened up to 338 which gives a slightly longer neck for better bullet support.

So it's a .300? Or a .338?

The American Wildcats nomenclature puts the actual calibre first such as .338/300 or .375/06IMP contrary to the English versions putting the parent case first, ie: 450/400 or 577/500.

Custom 338-300 Long Neck by Steve Billeb, ACGG Founder / Member

I brought this because this is in fact a wildcat caliber and the price was Half of what it would have been if it was a conventional caliber. I just added the vintage Weatherby scope from the time when this was built. I was much surprised to find it was "un-fired".)

This is a new caliber for me and perhaps others may have some information about it.

As you can see in the picture, it has more case capacity than a standard 338 win mag, and the "long neck" gives better bullet support, but its the "long neck" that puzzles me. What brass do you use to get the long neck? I used a 375 H&H to make the one shown.

.300H&H or .375H&H would be the case to use.
Neck up or neck down and trim to length as necessary.
I suppose 8mm or .416 Rem Mag might also be used
Not sure on their actual length, though.

Yes, 300 H&H necked up would be preferred to avoid case neck and shoulder wrinkles. And the fire-form to expand the shoulder. But, I don't think getting the "long neck" is worth the trouble, or any advantage for hunting accuracy. Opening up the 300 Win Mag case (as shown 338-300 in the pic) is an easy one-step and load option.

Here's my first field test - a very remarkable rifle. Since it was new and unfired, the first shot was a flyer.

If you are using .300 Win. Mag. brass and jumping the bullet that far I am surprised at the accuracy.
So good, so far.
The ballistics seem a little light for such a light bullet. First loads thou.
Good guess on a starting load.

There is no bullet jump. The bullet is seated to touch the rifling.
