Next Sporting and Rook Rifle Match, Oakridge, TN
      #381126 - 11/12/23 08:17 AM

The next Sporting & Rook Rifle Match will be held on April 19 and 20, 2024.

This will be the second Sporting & Rook Rifle Match in recent history. The first match was held on October 13 & 14, 2023. That was a great match. Chris Flaherty and I both shot in that match.

It was interesteing to see a number of Farquharsons, Alexander Henrys, Hollands, etc being displayed and shot.

I will post more information about the match when I get it.

Now, THAT sounds like a fun match - participating as well as seeing what guns show up.

Sounds a great event alright 85lc - would be a lot of eye candy there!
What is the criteria for the event, number of shots etc?
Sounds very similar to our Rook & rabbit event here for BGR.

Sounds antiquated. In a good way.

The matches are shot offhand (standing) at 25, 50, and 100 yards. There are 5 shots per target.

One requirement is that the rifles must be of the period, single shot, sporting & rook rifles shooting lead bullets using open sights.

The range is located in the heart of the Smokey Mountains and is beautiful.

The price iof admission is minimum, covering the price of targets and a dinner at the match. Tom Rowe and Rick Weber host the match and do all the work.

I am within driving distance but if someone wanted to fly in (say from west coast), Oakridge is very close to Knoxville (35 minute drive).

Guys, Below is the updated fyer sent by Rick Weber and Tom Rowe that addresses the matched.

Sporting Rifle & Rook Match – April 19 & 20, 2024

Tom & I would like to host another match, bringing attention to a specific part of Arms making history that seems to be missing in today’s shooting world - Sporting Rifles of the 19th Century; Platinum Age of Gunmaking.

The event will take place at the Oak Ridge Sportsman Association (ORSA) in Oak Ridge, TN. The Sporting Rifle match will start on Friday afternoon at 1pm, April 19, 2024 and resume with the 2nd match - Rook/.22lr will be on Saturday morning 9am. We’ll have a catered dinner on the firing line (weather permitting) on Friday at 5pm.

Sporting rifles of the 19th Century are arms designated for Sporting (hunting) use. These arms may originate from any country and are typically single shot & half stock in nature. We had a great time last year, not only the shooting, but seeing, holding, shooting rare rifles. Rifles shall use lead cast bullets and appropriate powder in which the arm was designed.

Note: .22lr single shots will be permitted this year. We’ll have a separate class and they’ll be shooting alongside the Rook rifles.

Rifles will have barrel sights and no supporting apparatus for the shooter. The shooter is expected to shoot the rifle without the support of any artificial mechanism or part of the body – supported in the shoulder with one hand on the grip and the other grasping the forend.

Paper targets at 25, 50 & 100 yards - 5 shots at each target/distance within a specified time. We’ll use the same format and big red bull target as last year as it seemed to work out well.
Cost of the event will be $40. ($10 to ORSA + $5 Awards + $25 caterer).

I ask that you invite and/or bring friend – according to the NSSF, it’s the #1 way to foster more shooting.
