.308 Winchester ,modified .30/06 or .300 Savage?
      #36534 - 26/08/05 11:46 AM

I was reading up on the history of the .308 Winchester cartridge and some material claims Winchester and the US army shortened the .30/06 to produce the 7.62Nato or .308Win in 1954 but other material says Savage shortened the .30/06 in 1921 to produce the .300Sav to "duplicate .30/06 in a shorter cartridge " and the US army was very interested in this cartridge as it met their requirement but Winchester wanted to lengthen the cartridge and produce a "Winchester" cartridge for obvious commercial gain . So is the .308Win/7.62Nato a .300Savage modified or a .30/06 modified?

Quoting directly from Doug Murray's marvellous little publication "The Ninety-Nine: a History of the Savage Model 99 Rifle" in 'Part 4: The Cartridges'

'The .300 Savage' (page 4-16)

"In the early 1950's the .300 Savage round was modified by the Army to develop the 7.62 NATO cartridge design. In 1952 it was introduced to the civilian market as the .308 Winchester, and in 1954 was adopted by the Army as the 7.62 NATO round."

Some articles I have read say different ".30/06 shortened" but I think the Savage .300 is the true ancestor, so it should be

1906 -.30/06 Springfield

1921- .300 Savage

1952-.308 Winchester

1954-7.62 NATO (NATO adopted the T-65 or .308 Winchester in 1954)
