I'm a huge fan of the .243W as a second rifle. Most African game isn't huge or dangerous and there can be some great hunting in the little ones.

He makes sense. Though I would replace the 30-06 with an 8X57. No real difference in the field I would say, just a personal preference.

I remember the .243 to be one of the most common calibers in Kwa-Zulu/Natal where we lived in '89.

Truth is, if a guy wants to dodge recoil, he could take the similar-kicking but demonstrably better caliber like the 6.5x55 and be done with almost all plains game shooting.

I as well am a fan of the 243W..have used one for years --in fact mine is at the gunsmiths right now getting a new barrel..while at it I am having the action blueprinted, new stock, trigger, etc... but leaving it a .243 Winchester...

Have used that little gun for P-dogs,coyotes, pronghorn, mule deer, mtn. lion, black bear and elk...has killed them all..no problems...for a running around truck gun caliber that will handle 90% of what I might run into, its the perfect caliber...in fact I killed the black bear and most of the antelope using a handload of Varget powder and 70gr Nosler ballistic tips..same load I used on the P-dogs--running about 3550fps..
