I have always hunted with primitive open sighted rifles. This one deserves the "noble savage" compliment in my opinion.

I have a 30s vintage 9.3X62 Husqvarna with the original express sights on it that I restored and am going to go back to Africa with. I have been pleasantly surprised at just how good those sights are in every hunting situation I've been in with it. We Americans don't have very many domestic rifles with decent open sights to choose from. My last trip to South Africa sort of soured me on scopes and for all of the shooting opportunities I had, open sights were all I needed.

That's why I took the $45.00 stock from Midway, a 26" 7x57 barrel from Douglas, Smith Enterprises rear sight, a M-98 Mauser an uncle gave me that hadn't been fired in 20 years and some elbow grease:
It's not the Pleizur rifle but it'll do for carrying through the woods here at home chasing bambi ( in fact last years buck was it's first kill ).

The sight I used is actually made for a .45-70 Marlin 1895 rifle with octagon barrel. I've probably got enough elevation adjustment for 2,000+ yards with a 7x57 
I had to put a shim under the rear portion to raise it up enough to be visible above the front receiver ring and file the goove on the elevation slider a bit. Then it took a bit of calculation to order the right front sight. But it's all dialed in right where I want it now.
Next I may replace that two stage military trigger with something a bit more modern. Then again, I may just learn to shoot it the way it is.

ANyone who has the money can buy the Plezier rifles. Yours is unique because you made it yourself.

Thanks, it's a bit rustic up close. I wanted representative of what someone in my financial bracket would have used in or about 1905. (ie. poor civil servant)
The best compliment it's gotten was from a friend who works in a gun shop. He asked if I was going to customize it, thinking it was old enough to be worth more untouched.

I don't have a picture handy as I'm a work. Mine is on a modified pad for the bead on a shotgun barrel, raising the rear portion of the sight up .1". If I knew then what I know now I'd have had the sight dovetail cut about two inchers further toward the action to increase sight radius and raise the rear sight above the front of the action.
