3 Gun battery for Africa

I've finally assembled my 3 gun battery for Africa

Top is a 1994 Brno ZKK 600 in 7x57. Scope is a Kahles CT 3-9x42. I am going to use 162gr Hornady projectiles for now. I haven't quite got the load finalised but should get just over 2700 fps .

Middle is a 1924 Mauser Oberndorf Type B in 9.3x62. I'm using a 286gr projectile at 2200 fps to regulate with the open sights.

Bottom is the latest rifle, only got it yesterday. A 1950's FN mauser with a MAB barrel in .404 Jeffery. This is the rifle made by forum member VonGruff. haven't fired it yet, but it will happen this weekend.

The only thing to add is a double in .470 NE, but I am going to have to win the lottery for that one!

Nice rifles but I would chance the 9,3x62 to some flatter shooter.

Actually, IMO you don´t need any middle caliber because you could shoot any normal plains game with 7x57 and the others, even most DG with .404. But indeed, good big double rifle would be a usefull add to yours garderope.

Nice tripplets.

I have collected parts for a 7x57 and 9,3x62 myself.. and have started thinking about a bigger bore as well, for a 3 gun battery.

Somewhat inspired by Von Gruff, they will all wear Peep/Ghost sights, and the orginal safetys are getting gold lettering inlays.

Excellent.

I am going to commit Nitro Express sacrilege however and say I would want all three with QD mounted scopes. Very useful for shooting eg buffalo out of a herd, or longer range shots.

As for the future .470, with a .404, you will want a .500 NE at the least.

I tend to think that three rifles is too many.

The gun case will be over sized an weight, these tend to get left beside the plane with some frequency.

Besides when you are hunting mountain reedbuck and eland shows up ...

9.3x62 and the 404 will take care of everything if you scope the 9.3.

Very nice set.

I have the 416Rigby and am having a 350 Rigby built on a M17action. This will be loaded to what Rigby should of loaded it, not what they did load it. Think 338/358RUM. I would think that this combination will take care of all that Africa has to offer that need a rifle.
