Cartridges,winners and losers

There are so many factory cartridges and wildcats out there that every combination of caliber from the .14Walker to the 4bore has already been claimed. If someone can come up with a new caliber that can be widely accepted by the shooting fraternity as better than what already exists then they deserve to have their name stamped on the barrel and the cartridge head.
Norma recently designed the .338 Norma. By shortening the Lapua case so the bullet does not extend into the cone and by reducing the taper of the case walls to compensate for shorter case. This was done to increase precision and still fit in a Lapua mag. Will it replac the Lapua? Nosler came out with the .26 Nosler due to the popularity of the 6.5/.284 Winchester.
Winchester came out with its .17WSM rimfire. Will it catch on time will tell but there are only two guns that chamber it. The low cost Savage B-Mag and the pricey and unobtainable Winchester low wall
single shot. I think a .22WSM would have been better. Hornet performance at .22WRM price.
The .223WSSM did not catch on. Same can be said of the RSAUMs.
The .17 Hornet is new. Will it become as popular as its bigger brother?
What does the hunter/shooter want that is not already out there?

G'Day Fella's,

Wanabebwana, as I mentioned in the "Big Bore" section of this forum, I'm surprised nobody has come up with a .290"-ish bore Dia?

Doh!

The last modern cartridge rifle I bought was in 6.5 creedmoor. Is it better than the old 6.5s ? I don't believe so. But I found it kind of interesting. Anyway, a reason to buy a new gun. Al

The 17 WSM is now chambered by Ruger in the /22 rifle. This alone should ensure a better chance of survival and may well see the end of the 17 Hornet.

It's still not as potent as the 5mm Remington, but that's another story entirely......

Well, the .17HH is quite popular already, but didn't 'take the cake' like the .17HMR did. However, it is solid performer and guys that have them, like them. It's only about 250fps slower than the .17AH. My AH routinely gets 3,900fps with 20's and 3,600's with 25's. As long as these loads are not hurting this "weakest of all CF brass", I'll continue to use them.

The .17WSM is increasing in popularity and for good reason. 3,000fps with a 20gr. really increases the performance over the HMR's 17gr. at 2,550fps (my 21" Marlin does 2,620fps & 18 1/8" Martini = 2,584fps)
This 3,000fps with 20gr. Vmax makes this .17 WSM a 300yard to 350yard gopher rifle, something the 5mm rem and .22 WMR could never do. The .17's are just that accurate. My little HMR takes gophers from a particular set of holes every year, 282yards from our firing point - if I use the Martini. The .17WSM is a LOT better than the HMR- if it has the accuracy. That's the unknown factor right now.

So - the Savage B Mag, the Semi Volquartson (I believe) and now a Ruger. Not sure about a CZ in the future.
