Curious if anyone is using one of these in their travels? Seems like a handy little travel package--couple of different barrels and the world is your oyster..

thx

G'Day Fella's,

FYI Ripp, a mate/customer of mine travels extensively OS (EU, USA and Africa) hunting.
He has all sorts of exceedingly nice, custom made conventional bolt action and double rifles, but since he purchased his Blaser, thats what he usually takes!
He usually takes it apart and places it in his suit case!
He told me that it reduces his luggage and that makes his travel life easier for him.
If he goes to Africa, he will usually have a couple of rifles and not always the Blaser!

Hope that helps

Regards
Homer

I'd love one.

They go up to .500 Jeffery too!

Thank you Homer and Ash..

Yes my thoughts are much less weight and hassle if they work out...I have visited with a few who have used them 10 years or more and love them.

Starting out with a 300 Win Mag and 375H&H..if they work well will expand from there. Plan to use them for the next few trips..however when headed to African will probably take one of the 375 H&H's and my WR 470 double..have to take the double to Africa, just have to..

I would like one with the Steel action ,but its more expensive ,the Kilombero and have barrels in 223,300,500 Jeffery ,that would do me for everything, Euro Optics have them and they are good to deal with ,good travelling with a take down rifle, although most people these days dont know what you have when its a long case ,elderly ladies always seemed to know its a rifle though ,young people have no idea.

I have an R8 professional success. Relatively new to it but it is bloody accurate and very fast for follow up shooting. I have a 6.5 x 55 barrel paired with a ballistic turret swaro z5 for use on deer and a 3006 barrel paired with an aimpoint H30s for general walkabout hunting and pigs. Very happy with it thus far. Have taken bunnies, dogs, pigs, and chital with it thus far. I use it for all of my medium game / routine hunting.may take it for chamois later this year too.

Your comments duplicate almost all I have talked to about this as to accuracy and fast follow up shots....plan to put a swaro on the 300 win mag barrel --not sure what I will use for the 375H&H yet..

thx

I have had a couple of R93s and one R8. All were incredibly accurate such that groups were sinfully small, bordering on single ragged holes at 100 yards!!! calibers: .223, ..270 Win, 300 Win Mag, .375 H&H and the R8 was a 9.3x62.

I absolutely loved the weight and handling gracefulness of the R93s, but both were guns that went "click" when they should have gone "bang". The R8 was a beefier gun at the expense of the graceful feel of the R93.

The R8 worked flawlessly with factory ammo, but was a stubborn bitch with any and all handloads and refused to chamber any of them, short of beating the action forward with a block of firewood. I even went and bought a second die set to ensure I didnt have a die set problem.

In so far as ergonomics, my biggest beef is with the shape of the trigger guard. When the recoil goes up with the larger calibers, the trigger guard was sure to smash the hell out of my second finger.

I truly love the concept of the speed of the straight pull, and I keep trying to convince myself that I need to try just one more time in the hopes of finding a rifle that will make me happy in the field, but sometimes the hassle of fighting with the idiosyncracies of a tool makes for an unpleasant outing. I love the takedown concept as well, but I'll be damned if I'll fly to the other side of the world on an expensive hunting trip with anything other than the utmost trustworthy of rifles. My doubles travel in a nice small form factor, so Blaser is out.

Btw: I also have a K95 that is accurate in the extreme, and I have brought it as a backup on a long 24 hour truck drive to go caribou hunting, but I am having how shall we say? uh...... trust issues with it after the experiences of the straight pull rifles to the point that it would be unconscionable for me to rely solely on it. My K95 has always been properly behaved thus far........hmmmm.

Postman, sounds an unfortunate set of issues you have had. I have found the ergonomics excellent and see that as a strong point of the rifle although my R8 is the professional success thumb hole stock. As for the handload issues, that is very odd. As with many rifles, the R8 doesn't like deep seated primers, but mine has been 100% reliable with factory and hand loads in 2 different calibres.what calibre did you have issues with? It would seem odd that factory loads are fine but that all handloads are not? Neck or full length resized?
Cheers

Hi GWH:

The R8 was a 9.3 x 62. The handloads were F/L resized, trimmed to the proper "trim to" length, chamfered, deburred, etc., bullets seated deep enough to avoid touching the lands.... I tried die sets from two different die manufacturers properly adjusted to ensure the shoulders were appropriately pushed back, etc.....

The gun always went bang, but the loads just wouldn't chamber without significant and unnatural force applied to hammer the action closed.

My LRS2 in .308 ate over 500 hand loads and a few hundred factory loads without any issues at all. Accuracy was outstanding, I mainly shot a 168gr SMK or Amax over 44gr Varget. Brass used was Winchester, Lapua and Hornady. Primers didn't seem to matter.

I my view, the main drawback to the Blaser rifles is that you are stuck with factory barrels. They might do better if they opened up their design to custom barrel makers.

Factory barrels aren`t bad at all...
And Blaser will get less money if they open the platform to major aftermarket parts such as barrels.
Let`s face it - Blasers aren`t the cheapish ugly rifle you need to tune.. It`s a fine piece of engineering in it`s stock variant. No round action,no soldiered bolt handle,no screw-on recoil lug,no bullshit tiny extractor made of tin...

Best regards,
Jordan.
