Wich rifle for 300 RUM??
      #244165 - 22/03/14 03:47 AM

Hello friends, I know I going to say I'm crazy. You know that I bought a Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Weatherby but I soon sold it, first because 24 inch barrel for firing the cartridge did not convince me then is because I wanted to buy a shotgun skeet.

But now again I'm saving for a long-range rifle, and I thought about buying a rifle cartridge 300 RUM (Remington Ultra Magnum), which makes me doubt it is the rifle that I will choose, so I ask advice:

Remington 700 BDL-

-Remington SPS

-Remington Sendero

I await your answers. Thank you,

Ovny.

To be of assistance it would be helpful to know what you intend to use the rifle for.

The 300 RUM is a fine cartridge BUT it needs at least a 26" barrel and 28" is better.

For most hunting where a 30 caliber is useful, a 300 Winchester Magnum will work just fine with less recoil and far longer barrel life.

If possible I would like you had 28 inches, but I think in Spain is not easy to find such rifles with barrel length. The truth is that using serious stalking in general.

Thank you,

The question remains: What do intend to use the rifle for ?

Serious stalking could be hunting Bear in thick cover OR trying to sneak within 300 yards of a Mountain Sheep.

You are correct about a 28" barrel on a factory rifle.

A 300 RUM kicks a lot. When they first came out, I bought a 700 Remington BDL for that cartridge. I fired 7 rounds and took it back to the gun shop. It is much worse than a 375 H&H or a 300 Winchester Magnum.

I can't think of any game in Spain that would require a 300 RUM.

I have a 338 RUM for long distance target shooting but it has a 36" barrel and weighs 20 pounds. Even it has a sharp recoil !

Actually you're right, I buy the rifle more as a treat that as a necessity. I have several rifles, a Remington 338 Winchester, but I feel as if something in my gunsmith, a long range cartridge. Probably nonsense, but I so sorry. My wife does not feel equal and tells me that if I save to hunt and unfortunately I believe that she is right jejeej.

Helllo Ovny,

I wanted to respond to your question as I have been using a 300RUM since they come out..mine is in a HS Precision...have hunted around the world with it and I personally love it..you can really crank them up if you hand load..or tune them down around 300 WIN ballistics if you want..Bullets I primarily use are either the Swift A-Frame or Scirroco...depending on the game I am hunting..as they just shoot really well out of that gun...I have several targets shooting under 1/2" group with that rifle at 100yards testing loads..it is incredibly accurate for a hunting rifle.

Recoil is a very personal thing. What is a lot to some is o.k. for others... I am not a big guy..5'10..185lbs...but I have NO problem with the recoil..in fact I also have the 7RUM, 338RUM and 375RUM...shoot them all..again depending on what I am hunting..

Agree with the comments you probably don't need a 300RUM for hunting..but I view that similar to needing another rifle...in most cases wants override needs.. and I am totally o.k. with that..

Now you speak 7 RUM, I see more and more logical than the 300 RUM when I have longer a 338 Winchester Magnum. What do you think? Well I think for stalking 7 RUM I will come just as well.

The 7rum is a very fast cartridge...and will cleanly kill anything that walks within reason and type of bullet used..factory loads are around 3450 fps for 140 gr loads..and yes, if recoil is an issue, it will also be slightly less..

I have the .300 RUM in a Remington 700 LSS that I won at a Ducks Unlimited dinner (on my birthday no less) in 2004.

I don't have much use for it since I don't get to go Elk hunting as much as I'd like, but I have shot some game with it and (this rifle at least) is deadly accurate with the factory barrel, which I believe is 24" long.

Obviously the best way to acquire rifles is to get them for free, or for $100.00 worth of raffle tickets, but good luck however and whatever you choose.

I've been fixated on calibers before and just had to have a 9.3x? really weird semi rammer super duper thumper, but what I can't quite get my head around is wanting a heavy 26inch barreled bean field rifle for 'stalking".

If you want a long range rifle great but to then try and cram it into a role that it does not really fill seems like pushing it to me. If it's a stalking rifle then a medium sporter would seem to make more sense. Why not a Remington Model 7 in 300 RSAUM or a Winchester Model 70 in a 300 WSM? Maybe ideally a Cooper Excalibur in 6.5x285, long range, lighter weight and more suited to the intended game.

If it's an itch you need to scratch, then scratch away. I think you'll get more satisfaction from just buying it as a toy you don't really need then trying to justify it. Luxury over made up need so to speak.

A gentle suggestion.

Stop screwing aound and buy a quality 300 Winchester Magnum. It will kill anything with the right bullets in the hands of a good shot and ethical Hunter. Would it be my first choice for Elephant, Buff or the big bears …. no. Probably illegal as well. Are you ever going to hunt these ? If so, a 300 RUM will add nothing except a few FPS, big muzzle flash and kick the snot of you.

Nothing big enough or far away enough lives in Europe. The 6.5x284 makes some sense but it frys barrels and ammo is hard to find. For practical hunting, it will do nothing that the ancient 270 WCF will not.

If you just "want" something, then buy it but don't deceive yourself that it will make you a better shot or hunter.

Best Elk hunter I ever knew killed way to many to count. His rifle for 74 of his 94 years was a 94 Winchester rifle in 30 WCF with a few special factory orders features. His ammo was whatever 170 gr flat point was on the shelf. A box of ammo lasted many years. His secret ? "You a'int hunting Elk until you can smell them." At 50 yards or less you put that 170 flat point through both lungs and guess what …. they die.

Let's make KISS the word of the day.

Onvy, Iīd agree with above, if you are not going outside europe get a bolt or single shot .30-06, put a 2.5x-6x 32 Leupold VXIII on it and you are fine for anything, best, Mike

Hello friends, I really should do is buy a good viewer for the 338 Winchester Magnum and secure it with the right tip I could hunt all in Spain and Europe, but we already know as we are hunters and gun lovers always want I also want more and more. And I have the whim of the RUM cartridges and considering that I have:

-458 Lott

-375 H & H Magnum

-338 Winchester Magnum

The one I need is a 7 mm better than a 300 (7.62 mm), so I think I'm headed with 7 RUM, sorry.

300 RUM is great cartridge for long range hunting, african plain game, mountain hunting. For europian game donīt shoot under 200 m (it is too devastating). If you want shoot for 400 m and longer is better choice 300 rum than 300wm. I made some rifles and rebarreling in this caliber and other RUM (338 and 375). My suggestions are barrels 26 inches minimum,28 better, 29,30 best. Twist I prefer 12, is better for 180 grain bullets and give less barrel pressure. Good choice is 180 gr barnes TSX in velocity around 1000 m/s (3280 f/s). Reloading is necesary because standard rifle barrels have great bullet jump so factory made ammo donīt shoot so well. Recoil, if you use longer barrels and lighter bullets (180 or 190 gr) I think it is OK.
