Caliber choice for M700 Ti mountain rifle?
      #239987 - 01/01/14 01:38 PM

I've found a barreled action from one of the Remington Titanium Ultralight rifles, it's in 30-06 and the bore looks new. I'm looking for ideas on calibers for a new barrel, I would also replace the bolt with a PTG setup so bolt face isn't important. Since the action is Ti it wouldn't make sense to do anything but make a light weight rifle with it.

Only complications are I already built a mountain rifle out of one of these actions in 280AI. I'm currently thinking 6.5-284. Ideas?

Its already set up for 30-06 length cartridges so I'd favor 6.5-06 over the 6.5-284. But, in a light titanium rifle I think the .240 Weatherby Mag would be really sweet.

+1 for the 6.5x284. Case life and factory available brass beat the 6.5x06.
Mine current one does 2950 with 140berger. Well over 3k with 130 in a 23" barrel.
It is a relative lightweight on a Stainless 6-lug USA Weatherby action w/ #2 Shilen in a Medalist stock. I fattened it up to 8 1/4lbs with the 4.5x14-50mm Zeiss.

The .240wby is a favorite as well. Very good choice.

I bought the exact same rifle when they were new. Had a Hart barrel installed in .257 Weatherby caliber..it is an awesome little rifle..great to carry in the mtns and very long range capabilities...

I would personally go with a 6.5x284 - or a 6.5x57IMP.
SA 60 gr. case chamber can easily be cut with a .260 Rem chambering reamer, just run it in far enough to headspace on a necked down 7x57 or 8x57 case.

The resulting ctg. will have a .454" shoulder, although the short neck of the .260 Rem- not a bad thing at all.

My daughter's rifle chambered for this (initially) made 3,300fps with 120gr. Barnes XLC's using Reloader #19.

My only concern with the 6.5-284 is that it won't do anything the 280AI won't except has a bit less recoil. The other caliber I've been kicking around it the 9.3x62mm, a 6lb rifle in that cartridge could be interesting.

.338-06 perhaps? Might make a nice and useful lightweight rifle with 225gr bullets...

Unimaginatively I would leave it a 30/06. All time great, nothing to do.

I'd leave it at '06 too.

Me personally I to would leave it in 06. If it was already in the other calibre all good but the classic 06 is a good all rounder. Having said that I have a nice 338-06 that is a great carry rifle built on a Mauser action and my "lightweight" is in 7x57. Anyway a great thing about this sport is we are all different

SharpsNitro, it depends what game you want to take with your rifle. If lighter species are on the menu I would go with 6.5-06, if larger game such as ibex is intended to be harvested then the 308 Norma Mag is a fine choice.

In the same way that there might be too much overlap with a 6.5-284 and a .280AI, I think you might find the same with a .280AI and .30-06; but a .338-06 would give a sufficient 'step-up' for elk, moose, bears, boar, etc.

9.3x62 wouldn't be a bad choice either but I think I'd build one of those a fraction heavier...

Fun having these choices though!
