Blaser Rifle--R8
      #218769 - 01/11/12 03:58 AM

Curious if anyone has experience with these---they seem to be really easy to travel with...a good friend of mine was recently hunting muskox up north..he said there were 4 in camp ..

Plus on the long trip to Africa--take 2 barrels and you are set...one for plains game one for dangerous ..

Thank you

I had a look at one in the last few weeks. Not personal experience though. Hopefully actual owners will comment.

Their are claims they are safer than the R93's.

They are in-acctractive to my eye.

I think they make a good travel rifle. Versatile with swappable barrels/mags/bolts etc.

However a downside of one rifle, two calibres is you can only have one calibre setup at a time. Better two rifles, or one calibre which does the lot.

Short and relatively light.

I think the price of them (here at least) is over-priced. One reason I bought a more traditional modern bolt action, the Mauser M03. The price on your link looks better than the prices in Aust I have seen (over double that price).

I do not like the concept of the magazine and trigger being the same unit one bit. Or that the trigger is so easily detachable, can be misplaced, lost, forgotten etc. And how will the trigger continue to function if continually pulled in and out?

Just my thoughts on the R8.

I compared it to my R93. Of course you have a magazine on the R8, but I am used to not have a magazine and do not find it disadvantageous. And I do not like the concept with trigger and magazine in same unit. They say the trigger is better, I donīt feel any big difference, itīs ok on at least my R93. If you have a R93 already with several barrels, you canīt use them in the R8. The Blasers are good rifles, but in my opinion if you really want one, you could buy a used R93 for a really good price from somebody who desperately wants himself a R8 . //Staffan

I don't have any experience with the R8 but I did have an LRS2 (R93 based) in 308 a while back. It was a very accurate rifle and I liked it a lot. When I was looking for a rifle to take to Africa I almost bought an R93 in 375 but went with an HS Precsion instead, I just didn't want to pay the Blaser price. They do make good stuff though, I recently bought an F3 to shoot clays with.

Thanks everyone for your help...

I copied this as the HS caught my eye...I purchased a HS back in 2001 in a 300 Ultra-mag..have traveled the planet with that rifle..have a 4-14 VX-3 on it..have shot lots and lots of rounds with that rifle..as well as over 50 head of plains game in Africa, lots of elk here in Montana, antelope, mule and whitetail, etc..it is by far the MOST accurate rifle I have ever owned...and while I have more expesive scopes...the Leupold on there currently has never had any issues of any kind..

I have looked at Blaser's before..just think they are a unique and handy little rifle..however when I go back to Africa..if I took just one gun I would probably take either one of my .416's or a .375 can call it good...if plains game was involved, more apt to take the .375H&H..for a bit more versatility...have a friend who is getting a Blaser though..will be fun to check out and shoot.

I wonder how common the R8's are yet. It is a relatively new rifle model. The Blaser's have a huge following in Europe and also many Middle Eastern hunters (those of reasonable affluence.)

Fifteen barrels? Seems like he got carried away. Have you seen the Safari Package that Euro Optics sells? Kind of interesting, it's a cased set with a choice of 500J, 458L, 416R or 375H&H with a 300 Win Mag barrel. Price is steep though.

Still in two minds about these ,like the fact you can have a 222 up to a 500J on the same rifle ,R8 is supposed to be improved and safer than the R93 with two safety lugs im told ,would be good to own 1 rifle that can do everything rather than the 15 guns i have which i dont get around to using .The blued models i dont think look ugly, whether its a kraut Kontraption than is going to F..k up in the bush or somewhere in the middle of nowhwere is what bothers me, and would have no qualms wrapping it round a tree if it did ,cant get past the fact it reminds me of a toy gun my younger brother had 43 years ago hmmmmm

One reason some guys use the Mauser M03 is it appears to be a more of a "real" rifle, not a "contraption".

I have a .222 barrel and the largest is a .404 for my M03. Used the .222 a lot. The .404 is to be worked on this next month.

I have had both an R93 and an R8. The R8 is quite a bit heavier than an R93.

The R8 bolt has been slightly redesigned - the angle of the chamfer on the back of the petals is now at a right angle whereas on the R93 its about 70-80 degrees. This is to make it stronger and the R8 action has apparently been tested to over 200 000psi in Germany.

I have no doubt the R8 action is stronger.

But I now also have an M03. To me I just prefer the turnbolt action and its much easier to top load quickly - something the Blasers can be quite difficult to do - particularly with a large Euro scope fitted.

However the Blaser pull system is very quick if one practises with. 3-4 shots almost as quick as a double and the system itself as a takedown is really quite a brilliant piece of engineering.

There is no doubt though that a lot of European hunters like the Blaser! I believe they have about 80% of the market there?

The M03s are excellent value here in Australia tat the moment.........
